22 April 2001 - Hamburg, Germany -
Spain's Julio Rey won the 16th Hamburg marathon on Sunday in a course record time of two
hours, seven minutes and 46 seconds after edging out compatriot Javier Cortes in a sprint
finish.
Cortes came in two seconds after Rey, while third place was taken by the Kenyan Simon Lopuyet in a time of two hours 11 minutes and three seconds.
Rey's victory smashed the previous best time of two hours, nine minutes and 57 seconds set by Argentina's Antonio Silio six years ago.
The women's race was won by Sonja Oberem in two hours 26 minutes 12 seconds. She came in two and a half minutes ahead of her fellow German Luminita Zaituc.
Preparations for this year's event were overshadowed by a legal battle over whether German former Olympic champion Dieter Baumann, currently serving an international ban for doping, would compete.
A German appeals court on Friday upheld a previous ruling that Baumann could not run because of his suspension by the IAAF.
