IAAF President Diack inducted into Africa Sport Hall of Fame

27 December 2008 - IAAF President Lamine Diack was honoured during the 2008 Africa Sport Hall of Fame and Awards induction ceremony which took place on Saturday 20 December within the sumptuous premises of Bamako’s (Mali) Hotel Radisson.

Many African Sport leaders including the Chief of Staff of the President of Mali, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Youth and Sports as well as the ANOCA President, General Lassana Palenfo, the Secretary General of CONFEJES and other African sport authorities attended this initiative of the company Jappo. The event was particularly marked by the participation of famous Grammy Award winner and Malian artist Toumani Diabate.

Hall of Fame

“I am honored to take over from late Keba Mbaye who was my teammate at Foyer France Senegal”, thus spoke Lamine Diack, President of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) in a voice full of emotion when receiving the trophy magnifying his action within the framework of sport administration and at the same time marking his entry to the Africa Sport Hall of Fame in the ‘sports leader’ category.

This Africa Sport Hall of Fame induction ceremony on 20th  December 2008, according to President Diack, falls in line with the innovative dynamic of Jappo which, “since its creation, has been contributing to the promotion of African sport”. While acclaiming all the wonderful initiatives of Jappo such as the Africa International Sport Convention (CISA) and the induction to the Africa Sport Hall of Fame, the IAAF President said that “it is high time for sport professionalization in Africa, and to that regard Jappo has already marked out the way”.

It was quite unfortunate that this 2008 edition of the Hall of Fame was marked by the absence of Maria Mutola and Roger Milla who were unable to travel as planned. The latter has firmly promised organizers that he will come to Dakar to collect his trophy, before 31st December.

JAPPO Awards

The public in Bamako was able to discover the video showing the trophy presentation of the category ‘best sport installations development policy’ awarded to the President of the Republic of Tunisia Mr. Ben Ali. The presentation took place in Tunis in July 2008. The Jappo Award trophy for Sport Promotion in Africa went to South African and member of the International Olympic Committee Sam Ramsamy.

The Fair Play trophy was presented to the President of the National Olympic Committee of the Gambia A. B. Dandeh Ndiaye. The last trophy in this category rewarding Humanitarian Actions in sport will be presented to Dikembe Mutombo in the USA in early 2009.

Special Trophies

In terms of recognition, National Committees of Senegal and Mali, have also received trophies; the first one for hosting the first edition of CISA in 2007, and the second one for organizing the second edition of the Hall of Fame.

Finally a special trophy was awarded to the President of the Republic of Mali H.E. Mr Amadou Toumani Touré. This trophy said to be for recognition of merit, represents according to Diamil Faye, President of Jappo and organizer of the Gala Night, ‘a testimonial of his outstanding contribution to the development of sport in Mali’.

The 2008 evening’s event was opened on a note of remembrance in memory of an African sports great leader Abdul Wahab Ba who died last August and whom Diamil Faye remembers as one who “never failed to give support and advice to towards actions initiated by Jappo”.

Le Président Lamine Diack intronisé au Panthéon de la Gloire du sport africain

Lamine Diack, le président de l'IAAF a été honoré au cours de la cérémonie d'intronisation 2008 au Panthéon de la Gloire du sport africain, tenu le samedi 20 décembre dans le somptueux Hôtel Radisson de Bamako, au Mali.

De nombreux hauts fonctionnaires et dirigeants du sport africain, dont le directeur de cabinet du Président du Mali, le Secrétaire général du ministère de la Jeunesse et des sports malien ou encore le Général Lassana Palenfo, Président de l'ACNOA et le Secrétaire général de CONFEJES, étaient présents lors de cette initiative lancée par la société Jappo. On a également pu saluer la participation du célèbre musicien malien Toumani Diabaté, récipiendaire, entre autres honneurs, d'un Grammy en 2006.

Panthéon de la Gloire

"C'est un honneur pour moi que de succéder au regretté Keba Mbaye qui était mon coéquipier au Foyer France Sénégal" a déclaré, visiblement ému, Lamine Diack, le président de l'Association Internationale des Fédérations d'Athlétisme (IAAF) en acceptant le trophée qui reconnaît son action au sein de l'IAAF et qui l'intronise au Panthéon de la Gloire du sport africain en tant que dirigeant éminent du sport.

Le Président Diack a déclaré que cette cérémonie du 20 décembre 2008 illustrait à la perfection le dynamisme innovant de Jappo qui, depuis sa création, "contribue tant à la promotion du sport africain". Tout en louant toutes les fabuleuses initiatives de Jappo, dont la Convention Internationale du Sport Africain (CISA) ou encore la fondation du Panthéon de la Gloire du sport africain, le Président a également souligné qu'il était grand temps que le sport en Afrique se professionnalise et que, dans ce contexte, "Jappo a déjà montré la voie à suivre."

Malheureusement cette édition 2008 du Panthéon de la Gloire a été marquée par l'absence de Maria Mutola et Roger Milla qui n'ont pu effectuer le déplacement ainsi qu'ils l'avaient prévu. Milla a d'ores et déjà promis aux organisateurs de se rendre à Dakar pour recevoir son trophée en mains propres d'ici au 31 décembre.

Les Trophées JAPPO

Le public de Bamako a également pu visionner une vidéo montrant la présentation du trophée de la catégorie "Réalisation d'installations sportives", au Président de la République tunisienne, M. Ben Ali. Cette présentation s'est déroulée à Tunis en juillet 2008. Le Trophée Jappo pour le "Développement du sport en Afrique" a été décerné au Sud-africain Sam Ramsamy, Membre du Comité International Olympique.

Le Trophée du Fair-play est, lui, revenu au président du Comité National Olympique de la Gambie, M. A. B. Dandeh Ndiaye. Le dernier Trophée dans cette catégorie, celui des "Actions humanitaires dans le sport" sera remis à M. Dikembe Mutombo, aux Etats-Unis début 2009.

Trophées spéciaux

Les Comités Nationaux du Sénégal et du Mali ont également été reconnus par des trophées: le premier pour avoir accueilli la première édition du CISA en 2007 et le second pour avoir organisé la seconde édition du Panthéon de la Gloire.

Pour terminer, un trophée spécial a été remis au président de la République du Mali, S.E. M. Amadou Toumani Touré. Ce trophée, qui reconnaît le mérite, représente, selon Diamil Faye, le président de Jappo et l'organisateur de la soirée de gala, "un testament de sa contribution exceptionnelle au développement du sport au Mali."

La soirée 2008 s'est ouverte avec une pensée de tous ceux présents en mémoire d'un dirigeant africain sportif de grande envergure, Abdul Wahab Ba, décédé au mois d'août, qui, comme l'a souligné Diamil Faye, n'a jamais manqué d'apporter son soutien le plus total aux actions initiées par Jappo."
