Triple jumper Marian Oprea and shot putter Gheorghe Guset were the stars of the first day of the Romanian indoor championships in Bucharest on Saturday (18).
Oprea, the 23-year-old IAAF World Ranked number one, who was already the world season leader with his 17.70m leap on 11 February which then established him as the sixth furthest jumper of all-time indoors, is now the fifth best all-time thanks to his new national indoor record of 17.74m. The Olympic Games silver and World Championship bronze medallist who has an outdoor best of 17.81m will be one of the favourites at the 11th IAAF World Indoor Championships, Moscow, Russia (10 -12 March).
More of a surprise was the new national mark of 37-year-old Gheorghe Guset whose 21.04m heave was a substantial improvement on his 20.93m previous PB and national indoor record which he established when winning last year’s national indoor title. Fifth at last winter’s European Indoor Championships, the Romanian who has an outdoor best of 20.84m, is now the third furthest putter of this winter.
