Fabiana de Almeira Murer, bronze medallist of the 2008 World Indoor Championships, produced the best result of the “Troféu Brasil/Caixa de Atletismo” by vaulting to a new South American record of 4.80m at the event held in São Paulo from 25 to 29 June.
On Sunday 29 June, in the club competition that serves as the National Championships, the 27-year-old Murer broke her own 4.66 outdoor mark set in Monaco on 20 August 2006, and the indoor one (4.70) set in Valencia on 8 March 2008 while winning the bronze at the World Indoors.
After winning the contest with a first attempt clearance at 4.40, Murer then tried 4.50 which she also cleared also on her first attempt, 4.60 (second), 4.71 (third) - then the record with 4.80 successful on her third approach to end with 2 fouls and a pass at 4.91.
“I never enjoyed a fall as much as I did after clearing 4.80”, declared an emotional Murer. “This performance elevates me to a different level, and now I can realistically say that dreaming of a medal in Beijing is something possible.”
6.99 Long Jump
Maurren Maggi, silver medallist in Valencia, also performed extremely well, winning the Long Jump with her season’s best of 6.99/-0.5 (29 June). Like Murer's vault it was also the second best on the world list this summer.
“I have been able to jump further than 6.90 three times this season. Now I can surely say that I have chances to fight for a place on the podium at the Olympic Games”, said Maggi who obtained her seventh national title at this event where she holds the South American record with 7.26 (1999).
Maggi, who turned 32 on 25 June, had a brilliant series: foul, 6.90/-0.4, 6.66/0.4, 6.99, pass, 6.95/-0.2. In a contest filled with quality, Keila Costa finished second with a SB of 6.79/0.1, while Gisele de Oliveira (the Triple Jump champion) had a 6.66/0.7 PB, only good for third place.
Good triple jumping too
Another Brazilian hope for podium in Beijing is Triple jumper Jadel Gregório. The 2007 World Championships silver medalist won his seventh national title with a SB of 17.28/-0.7 (29 June).
“I wanted a better result… something closer to 17.60, but I’m very pleased with the victory. Things are going just according to our plan, so now I have to train with calmness and confidence to be able to fight for a medal in China”, said Gregório.
The organizers recognized the best performances of the meet of Murer, and ion the men’s division of the 49.15 400m Hurdles PB of Mahau Suguimati, the Japan-resident born in Goiás. “I have lived in Japan for the past 16 years, and I made the trip to Brazil to obtain this triumph.”
Suguimati is one of the six athletes who secured a spot in the Brazilian Olympic team in the five days of competition in São Paulo. The others are all female: Evelyn dos Santos in 200m, Maria Laura Almirão in 400m, Maíla Machado in 100m hurdles, Lucimar Teodoro in 400m hurdles and Elisângela Adriano in Discus. For Adriano it will be her third Olympic team, and the qualification comes after recovering from back problems.
