The men's javelin final was over in the first round, as Till Wöschler launched a titanic 82.52m throw which withstood all attempts to approach it. It was the only junior mark over 80m this year so far and makes him the fifth-best on the all-time junior list.
Wölscher passed his second attempt and his fifth as it became apparent that nobody would approach the 80m line, much less his mark. His three other attempts were long but would not have been enough to win; his series was 82.52m, -, 76.05m, 74.99m, -, 76.08m.
Behind Wölscher, the excitement came in the fourth round, when Japan's Genki Dean threw a 76.44m PB to move into second ahead of Russia's Dmitri Tarabin. Tarabin held third to the end with his second-round 76.42m toss.
In fourth place, Lars Timmerman of the Netherlands threw a national-record 75.66m. Local favorite Caleb Jones of St. John, New Brunswick, who carried the Canadian flag at the opening ceremonies, finished 10th with a PB 69.77m.
