| The dominion of the Kenyan athletes in steeplechase was confirmed with gold and silver medals, making this their fifth consecutive World Championships victory. The winner was Christopher Koskei ahead of his teammate Wilson Boit Kipketer (8:12.09). Moroccan Ali Ezzine (8:12.73) took the bronze medal. The race was slow at the beginning but afterwards Ionescu (ROM) set a faster pace with the kilometer reached in 2:48.08. The Kenyans overtook Ionescu at 1400 meters. Barmasai headed the race followed by the other Kenyans, Kallabis (GER) and Ezzine (MAR). 300 meters from the finish Koskei was the only one to respond to the attack of Kipketer and took the lead going into the final straight. He won ahead of the champion in Athens '97, Wilson Boit Kipketer (8:12.09). Germany's Damian Kallabis was the first European in the event, fourth with 8:13.11. This final was the first defeat for the Kenyan Bernard Barmasai this season. He was fifth with 8:13.51. |

El dominio de los keniatas en los 3.000 obstaculos se
refrendo con las medallas de oro, quinto triunfo consecutivo, y plata. El vencedor fue
Christopher Koskei (8:11.76) por delante de su compatriota Wilson Boit Kipketer (8:12.09).
La medalla de bronce fue para el marroqui Ali Ezzine (8:12.73). La carrera fue lenta desde
el inicio hasta que el Ionescu (ROM) decide incrementar el ritmo pero el paso por el 1.000
fue de 2:48.08. El rumano abrio un hueco pero los keniatas lo rebasan a falta de 1.600
metros. La cabeza de la carrera es para Barmasai seguidos de sus compatriotas, el aleman
Kallabis y el marroqui Ezzine. A falta de trescientos metros es Koskei el unico que
responde al ataque de Kipketer y logra entrar en cabeza en la recta, logrando el triunfo
por delante del hasta hoy campeon del mundo, Wilson Boit Kipketer (KEN) que hizo un tiempo
de 8:12.09. El aleman Damian Kallabis fue el primer europeo en la prueba, al entrar en la
cuarta posicion con 8:13.11. Esta final contemplo la primera derrota de la temporada del
keniata Bernard Barmasai (8:13.51), que concluyo en la quinta posicion.  |
