7 March 1998Reigning 100m world champion Marion Jones (USA) has clocked the second fastest women's 60m indoor time ever in Maebashi, Japan.

During the Gunma International meeting, she won the 60m in a time of 6.95 seconds: 0.03 seconds short of the 6.92 mark set by Russia's Irina Privalova on 11 Feb 1993 and 9 Feb 1995. Privalova set both of her marks in Madrid.

In Maebashi, Jones was fast off the blocks and powered away from the rest of the field, leaving second-placed Chioma Ajunwa (NGR) fully 0.27 behind her. Jones has expressed goals of 10.50 for the 100m and a new world record in the 200m (both marks currently held by fellow American Florence Joyner - Flo-jo - with 10.49 for the 100 and 21.34 for the 200).

She only fully returned to athletics last year after a two year break playing professional basketball.
