Former Olympic and world hammer throw champion Koji Murofushi was unveiled as the sports director of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games on Tuesday (24).

Murofushi, the 2004 Olympic and 2011 world champion, was appointed to the role which acts as a liaison between athletes, international sports federations and the organizing committee.

"The most important thing is the needs of the athletes," said Murofushi, speaking to local reporters. "In the role of sports director, I always have to be sensitive to the needs of the athletes."

The 39-year-old Murofushi, who is also an IAAF Ambassador, competed in six World Championships and four Olympic Games. He is also a member of the Tokyo 2020 executive board.

"I've had the honour of competing in four Summer Olympic Games from Sydney 2000 to London 2012 and I know what it takes to make a great Olympic experience for athletes.

"The bottom line is we need to create an environment where the athletes can perform well.

"The athletes have to sleep well, eat well and have good transportation. I know there are some issues with the venues but my job is to help create optimum conditions for the athletes.

"Every venue will have to take care to help athletes and ensure their safety and this is something that we will be working on," commented Murofushi.

"I want to contribute to organising an athlete-focused Games that will deliver a long-term legacy and benefit for the sporting community in Japan and beyond. In 2020, we will host the entire world and I want to create an environment at the Tokyo Games that will enable athletes to compete and perform to the peak of their abilities.”

Despite his other duties, Murofushi is still competing and earlier this month won his 20th consecutive national title at the Japanese Championships.

Murofushi is also currently an associate professor in sports science at Chukyo University in Nagoya.
