Lornah Kiplagat, who was fifth in the Olympic 10,000m and 4th at the World Championships will run the previous year in Paris, will run the New York Marathon 2004 on Sunday 7 November.

Kiplagat, 30, a native of Kenya who became a Dutch citizen last year, returns to the ING New York City Marathon after a successful outing in 2003. Her time of 2:23:43 placed her third behind Margaret Okayo and Catherine Ndereba in a closely contested race.

Married to her coach Pieter Langerhorst, Kiplagat has run 13 marathons, taking wins in Los Angeles (1997 / 1998), Amsterdam in 1999 and Osaka in 2002. As well as her third place marathon finish in New York last autumn, she has been second in Chicago (2000), fourth in Boston (2001), fourth in Osaka (2001).

Kiplagat was also announced as one of four professional female athletes competing in the ING New York City Marathon 2004 Run for Something Better which was created to support New York Road Runners' core mission-to promote health and fitness in the local and international running communities. Each participating athlete competes on behalf of two charities, one of her choice and the other a New York City park to which she is assigned.
