Since the IAAF World Championships in Athletics, Paris 2003, the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) and the International Fair Play Committee (CIFP) have teamed up to reward a special Fair Play Award to a track & field athlete for his or her truly special achievements on and off the track. In 2003 the award was presented to Jonathan Edwards while in Helsinki in 2005, Frank Fredericks and Heike Drechsler were the recipients.
This year the IAAF and CIFP are honoured to award this special fair play prize to Mike Powell of the USA. Mike is the holder of the Long Jump World record which he set in Tokyo during the 1991 IAAF World Championships in Athletics. This was a truly memorable performance when he broke Bob Beamon's 23-year-old Long Jump World record by 5cm, leaping 8.95m. As well as his famous 1991 victory, Mike won the Long Jump again at the 1993 World Championships in Athletics and came third at the 1995 IAAF World Championships in Athletics. Mike continues to be involved in athletics as an IAAF Ambassador and an active coach.
The award will be presented by Lamine Diack, President of the International Association of Athletics Federations and on behalf of the International Fair Play Committee, Mr. Laszlo Tabori who broke the World record for 1500m in 1955 and is also a past Fair Play Award winner himself.
Congratulations Mike Powell.
