10 June 2008MonteCarloOf the total of 147 IAAF Member Federations who took part in IAAF World Athletics Day 2008, 112 submitted their results by the deadline, and accordingly their event winning boys and girls were entered for the traditional IAAF World Athletics Day Draw which took place this year in Monte-Carlo on 7 June 2008.
The weekend of Saturday 17 & Sunday 18 May was the preferred time for the IAAF’s Member Federations to celebrate the IAAF World Athletics Day in 2008, but in an effort to aid the greatest possible number of the participants this year Federations were given the option of holding their celebration at any time in the month of May if it suited their arrangements better. Over 110,000 youngsters participated worldwide.
The World Athletics Day 2008 Draw determined:
TWELVE Youth Age Group children, one Boy and one Girl per each Area of the IAAF (1991-1992; 16-17 years old) from the winners of Club competitions;
SIX children from the ‘Minimes’ age group who were the winners of School Individual competitions (Boys and Girls born in 1993-1994-1995; 13-15 years old ; ONE per Area).
These 18 ‘lucky winners’ will now be invited to the Herculis - IAAF World Athletics Tour – meeting in Monaco, which will be held on 29 July 2008, with their travel and full board accommodation costs for three days covered by the IAAF.
In addition, on the occasion of the IAAF School/Youth Commission in July 2008, 6 Teams (13-15 years old, 1 per Area) from the winners of School Team competitions will be drawn and each shall receive a “Kids’ Athletics” Kit for their school.
The Draw was made by IAAF Senior Vice-President, Sergey Bubka under the scrutiny of IAAF President Lamine Diack and IAAF General Secretary Pierre Weiss.
