MonteCarloDouble Olympic champion, Hicham El Guerrouj of Morocco, one of the greatest middle distance runners of all-time has joined the charity project, in which items of World Championship and Olympic memorabilia, donated by legends of our sport, are being auctioned in aid of three United Nations organisations, FAO, UNICEF and WFP.

Check out – http://www.iaaf.org/AFABW for further information.

El Guerrouj, the holder of the 1500m and Mile World records, is a four-time outdoor World champion and twice World Indoor gold medallist at 1500m, and has offered the gold medal competition kit and bib number which he wore when he won the 1995 World Indoor 1500m gold in Barcelona, Spain, his first ever global title.

The vest, shorts and the autographed bib number are particularly special to the Athens Olympic 1500m and 5000m champion, not just because he wore them at the beginning of his championship winning career but as they had originally been donated to a Moroccan family whose child was seriously ill and has since sadly passed away. This family has willingly given the items up for auction so that profits from its sale can help many other children.

All the auction lots are available for bids for a ten day period via eBay, with the main auction ending at 8am GMT on Thursday 26 January, though Hicham El Guerrouj’s donation will be uniquely open for bids until Sunday 29 January.

What’s your bid for a piece of sporting history?

Haile Gebrselassie’s 1996 Atlanta Olympic competition number still leads the way with bids topping $1000 but there are still plenty of items within easier reach starting for less than $50.
