26 May 2001 Madrid - Greek javelin thrower Konstadinos Gatsioudis unleashed a massive throw of 91.27 metres, the longest throw of the year, at the European Clubs' Cup here on Saturday.
Gatsioudis, a former world junior record holder and the 1999 world championship silver medallist, produced his effort with his first throw of the competition and then promptly retired.
The throw added nearly three metres to the best for the year, a mark he also owned.
The Greek thrower has a reputation for producing big throws in relatively small meetings but not always being able to reproduce that form in major championships and he finished sixth at the Sydney Olympics.
British triple jumper Phillips Idowu also produced the best outdoor performance this year with a personal best of 17.23 metres to win his specialist event for the London-based Belgrave club.
However, several triple jumpers went further during the indoor season.
At the end of the first of two days competition in the Spanish capital, the Russian club Sports Club Luch, which is based in Moscow, lead both the men's and women's competitions.
