Dominican athletes of the year named

The Dominica Amateur Athletics Association announced record-breaking juniors Sabina Christmas and Roger Polydore as its 2004 track and field athletes of the year (31 Dec).

Christmas, 17, was her nation's junior champion in the women's Javelin Throw. Her 41.11m effort secured her a place on the Dominican team to the CARIFTA Games in Bermuda, where she was second (43.42m national record by nearly a metre).

The Isaiah Thomas Secondary School graduate took silver at the Whitsuntide Games in Grenada (42.30m), and in June, she won (40.21m) the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Relays on Tortola, British Virgin Islands.

Polydore who will turn 20 next February, in the preliminary round of the men's 400m at Whitsuntide Games, clocked 47.62 to finish second (6th overall). At the World Juniors Championships Polydore was fourth in his heat, with a time of 47.43 (national junior record) for the one-lap race.
