Cárdenas joins classy Banamex meet 400m

Mexican sprinter 400 metres Alejandro Cárdenas Robles has confirmed his participation in the 2004 Banamex Grand Prix Athletic Show on 22 May in the 1968 Olympic Stadium.

Cárdenas Robles, 29 years old, yesterday said: “The presence of Jerome Young, Tyree Washington and Felix Sanchez on 22 May will help me to clock 45.55 and to have a chance to go to the Olympic Games."

Last season, Tyree Washington and Jerome Young from the United States, were first and second in the IAAF World Event Ranking, and in opposite order also took the gold and silver at the World Championships in Paris

The Dominican Felix Sanchez, double World 400m Hurdles champion (Edmonton 2001 and Paris 2003), will also run the flat 400 metres in Mexico City.

Alejandro Cárdenas, the 1999 World bronze medallist now has a 114 days to go until the Olympic Games and wishes to have a good race in the Banamex Grand Prix Athletic Show.

“After two surgical operations last year it is not easy to return to international competitions but I hope that everything goes well and that I capture a place for Athens 2004."

Alejandro Cárdenas ran his best 400 metres in one of the greatest finals in history at the  1999 World Championships when he took bronze, clocking 44.31. Ahead of him Michael Johnson (United States) won clocking 43.18 (World Record) and Sanderlei Parrela (Brazil) was second clocking 44.29.
