18 June 2001 – Rome - Retired pole-vaulting great Sergei Bubka has been elected chairman of the new European Athletes Commission.

Bubka edged out Italian judo expert Emanuela Pierantozzi in voting held last week when representatives from 38 European countries gathered in Rome for the organization’s first assembly.

Estonia’s Juri Tamm, Britain’s Miriam Batten, Switzerland’s Patrick Hurlimann, Finland’s Tuomo Karila, Belarus’ Vadim Sashurin and Patrick Hurlimann from the Netherlands joined Bubka and Pierantozzi on the commission.

The commission will take up issues affecting athletes with the European Olympic Committees, a spokeswoman for the EOC said.

Bubka, who retired in February, set world records 35 times and won six consecutive world championships and an Olympic gold medal.
