Bubka elected chairman of European Athletes Commission

18 June 2001 Rome - Retired pole-vaulting great Sergei Bubka has
been elected chairman of the new European Athletes Commission.
Bubka edged out Italian judo expert Emanuela Pierantozzi in voting held last week when representatives from 38 European countries gathered in Rome for the organizations first assembly.
Estonias Juri Tamm, Britains Miriam Batten, Switzerlands Patrick Hurlimann, Finlands Tuomo Karila, Belarus Vadim Sashurin and Patrick Hurlimann from the Netherlands joined Bubka and Pierantozzi on the commission.
The commission will take up issues affecting athletes with the European Olympic Committees, a spokeswoman for the EOC said.
Bubka, who retired in February, set world records 35 times and won six consecutive world championships and an Olympic gold medal.
