After impressive results in GP races he gave up his final year of scholastic eligibility in order to compete in the 1999 Grand Prix Final in which he was 2nd. He had a great outdoor season in 2001, but only won 3 out of 17 races at 1500m or 1 mile as he was 2nd to Hicham El Guerrouj seven times including his 3:26.34 at Brussels for 2nd on the world all-time list.
