Australia’s Gold Coast will welcome the area’s best athletes in June as they look to secure Olympic qualification at the Oceania Invitational Series.

With limited access to international competitions from the Oceania area due to the pandemic, the meetings at the Gold Coast Performance Centre on 5 and 12 June will offer athletes the opportunity to earn significant ranking points towards Tokyo, meaning that there will be some of the area’s best and brightest talent in attendance.

Not only will individual athletes be seeking qualification for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, but the area’s relay teams will also be looking to secure their spots. With the recent World Athletics Relays Silesia21 reshaping the qualification pathway for Tokyo and the World Athletics Championships Oregon22, relay teams will need to ensure that they have fast times to claim one of the limited spots available.

The Australian and New Zealand under-20 teams will also use the Oceania Invitational Series meetings as a significant development opportunity after withdrawing from the World Athletics U20 Championships this year.

In addition, Oceania Athletics has announced the return of the international teams competition, The Oceania Cup. Last contested in 2003, the return will see Australian and New Zealand athletes going head-to-head, vying for the prestigious trophy. It is hoped that in future years, the competition will expand to include a team from the Pacific.
