Great Britain’s world and European gold medallist Adam Gemili has announced his retirement from competitive athletics.

During a 14-year international career, he became European 200m champion and won three world medals in the 4x100m – those relay performances capped by the host nation’s golden run in London in 2017.

“After 14 unforgettable years, it’s time for me to hang up my spikes and step away from professional track and field, a sport that has shaped so much of my life,” the 32-year-old wrote on social media.

“It’s hard to put into words what an incredible journey it’s been. I feel so lucky to have lived my dream for so long, and truly humbled by every moment along the way.

“Time for a new chapter, but I’ll carry this one with me forever.”

After getting two silver medals in the 100m and 4x100m at the European U20 Championships in 2011, Gemili made his global championship debut the following year, winning the world U20 100m title in Barcelona.

He made his Olympic debut just one month later, the then 18-year-old racing in front of home fans in London.

He went on to claim world 4x100m gold (2017), silver (2019) and bronze (2022), and he won European titles in the 200m and 4x100m in 2014, the same year he secured Commonwealth Games silver in the 100m and 4x100m for England. He also claimed two more European relay titles in 2016 and 2018.

Returning to the Olympic stage in Rio in 2016, he finished fourth in the 200m, missing a medal by just three thousandths of a second.

Gemili did both football and athletics early on in his career and he now plans to work as a speed coach.

He has been a member of the World Athletics Athletes' Commission since 2023.
