IAAF World Championships 2005 - London presents its Bid
31 January 2000 – Monte Carlo - As the deadline approached for the submission of bids to host the IAAF World Championships, the Chairman of the London 2005 Bid Committee, Leonard Hatton presented the UK bid for the Championships to IAAF President Lamine Diack and the IAAF General Secretary, Istvan Gyulai, in Monte Carlo on Monday.

The IAAF Council is to announce the winners of the bidding process for the 2003 and 2005 World Championships at the IAAF Council Meeting in Paris on 3 April.

The IAAF has also received bids from the French Federation for Paris 2003 and an Australian bid to host the 2005 World Championships.

The London bid, which has full government backing, proposes Twickenham Stadium as the venue for the Championships, but the IAAF has been told that an alternative site may be proposed in the near future.

David Moorcroft, UK Athletics chief executive, said on Sunday: "Although we recognise that questions regarding the site remain unanswered...we have the backing and the means to succeed."
