SoSouth Africa took the first gold medal of the IAAF/Maroc Telecom World Youth Championships, as Jan Hoffman produced three throws over 20 metres, including a World youth leading throw of 20.99, a new personal best for the 17 year old.
Hoffman’s first put of 20.45 would have been sufficient to clinch victory, as none of the other contestants was able to produce a 20 metre throw, but he went on to throw 20.99 and 20.36, before a 19.54 effort and two fouls.
Czech Republic’s Vladislav Tulacek came back strongly with his final attempt of 19.97 to take the silver, with the final place on the podium going to Bulgaria’s Rosen Karamfilov with his second round effort of 19.86.
