Tentoglou and Dos Santos set world leads at national championships

Miltiadis Tentoglou equalled the Greek long jump record while Alison dos Santos produced the second-fastest 400m hurdles performance of his career as both athletes set world leads at their respective national championships on Sunday (26).

Double Olympic champion Tentoglou delivered the finest series of his career at the Greek Championships in Volos, recording three jumps beyond 8.60m.

He opened with a wind-legal 8.52m before soaring out to a wind-assisted 8.66m (2.7m/s) in the second round. Tentoglou then matched that distance with a legal 1.0m/s following wind in round three, improving his PB by one centimetre and equalling the national record set by Louis Tsatoumas in 2007.

Tentoglou, who moved to joint 13th on the world all-time list and joint third among Europeans, completed his series with another huge leap of 8.64m (0.7m/s) in the final round.

“My last jump was the best of the competition,” he said. “In my mind I have already jumped farther, but you haven’t seen it yet. I believe the big jump can happen this year.”

Dos Santos was similarly dominant at the Brazilian Championships in Sao Paulo, clocking a championship record of 46.48 to take 0.13 off Karsten Warholm’s previous world lead.

Only his 46.29 performance at the 2022 World Championships has been faster. Matheus Lima finished second in 47.97.

Vessat breaks long-standing French record

Samuel Vessat broke one of France’s longest-standing national records on the final day of the championships in Albi. The 24-year-old clocked 44.24 to take 0.22 off the French 400m record set by Leslie Djhone in 2007. Last month, Vessat came within 0.01 of Djhone’s mark when finishing fourth at the NCAA Championships.

Muhammad Kounta and Yann Spillmann also made significant improvements, finishing second and third in respective PBs of 44.55 and 44.92.

Thibaut Collet cleared 5.87m to win the pole vault before making three attempts at 6.01m. His brother Mathieu improved his PB to 5.82m to finish second.

Renelle Lamote prevailed in a close women’s 800m final, clocking 1:58.70 to finish 0.12 ahead of Clara Liberman.

At the German Championships in Bochum-Wattenscheid, national record-holder Emil Agyekum produced the leading performance with a 47.65 victory in the 400m hurdles.

Owen Ansah completed a sprint double, following his 10.00 victory in the 100m by improving his 200m PB to 20.13. Jean Paul Bredau improved his 400m PB to 44.72, while world silver medallist Merlin Hummel won the hammer with 79.18m.

Schilder throws 20.58m in Hengelo

World champion Jessica Schilder defied cold and wet conditions to win the Dutch shot put title with 20.58m in Hengelo. Jorinde van Klinken finished second with 17.85m before going on to win the discus with 65.12m.

Nadine Visser won the 100m hurdles in 12.66 after clocking 12.65 in the heats.

At the Swiss Championships in Zurich, world 800m leader Audrey Werro completed an impressive weekend with a gun-to-tape victory in 1:57.21.

Having improved her 400m PB to 50.80 in the heats on Saturday, Werro led the 800m final throughout and won by more than a second from Valentina Rosamilia (1:58.74).

World heptathlon leader Annik Kälin won the 100m hurdles in 12.67.

Inzoli and Sioli impress in Florence

Francesco Inzoli improved his long jump PB to 8.27m at the Italian Championships in Florence, adding the national title to the European U23 crown he won earlier this month.

Matteo Sioli equalled his PB of 2.30m to win the high jump, while Francesco Pernici clocked 1:44.89 to take the men’s 800m title. Sara Fantini produced the leading throws performance on Sunday, winning the women’s hammer with 73.33m.

Olympic silver medallist Bence Halász saved his best for last at the Hungarian Championships in Budapest, throwing a season’s best of 81.87m in the sixth round, finishing three metres ahead of Ármin Szabados (78.56m).

At the Polish Championships in Bialystok, five-time world champion Pawel Fajdek won the hammer with 79.03m.
