China’s Li Sha took an expected victory with a leap of 13.81m but the efforts of Estonia’s Kaire Leibak made her task a little harder than predicted.
Sha put out her best jump in the first round, coming within five centimetres of Cristine Sparatu’s championship record. Only Leibak, with her second-round effort of 13.74m could come close.
Sha entered the competition with the best three jumps in the world this year by under-18s, lead by her best of 13.83m. Leibak excelled herself to add 37 centimetres to her season’s best.
Romania’s Cristina Bujin, who had been expected to provide the biggest challenge to Sha, was third with 13.23m.
