1st IAAF WORLD ROAD RUNNING CHAMPIONSHIPS DEBRECEN, HUN – SUNDAY 8 OCTOBER 2006
18.1 Date and Location of Award of Competition The competition was awarded to Debrecen (HUN) by the IAAF Council at its meeting in April 2005 in Doha, QAT. The date was approved during the Council Meeting in Helsinki (August 2005) and modified in Moscow (November 2005).
18.2 General Comments Debrecen has 208.000 inhabitants. It is located 220km east from Budapest. The altitude is 121m above sea level. Debrecen is known for its university which is one of the oldest of Europe. The climate at the time of the Championships is rather mild with an average temperature (from the last 30 years survey) of about 13°C. and average humidity of 77%, 1.2mm of rain. The Official Airport is Budapest Ferihegy. All participants will be transferred from there to Debrecen, mainly by road. The race distance will be 20km. Regarding the course, see § 18.10.4.

Course description The athlete-friendly course in its entirety has been designated in the „lung” of the city in the Big Forest. The 5 km course may be considered flat, since the level difference on the full length of the course is only 12.44 m. The Competition Centre will be set up in and in front of the beautiful University Building.
Flight information: The Organising Committee inform all member associations that the delegations have the opportunity to fly directly to Debrecen. The LOC strongly suggests using the Budapest – Debrecen direct flight; this will shorten the travel time between Budapest – Debrecen from 4 hours to 35 minutes.
