Tegla Loroupe sets new record for one hour race
Kenya's Tegla Loroupe set a new world record distance of 18,340m in the women's one hour race on 8 August in Borgholzhausen (GER).
The previous record of 18,084m was set in 1981 by Silvi Cruciata (ITA). The record comes four months after the diminutive 26-year-old Kenyan had established a new world best in the marathon in Rotterdam of 2:20:47, demolishing the previous best of 2:21:06 set by Norway's Ingrid Kristiansen in the London Marathon in 1985.
Loroupe's performance came three days after a third place in the 5000m in the DN Galan Grand Prix in Stockholm, behind Zahra Ouaziz (MAR) and Britain's Paula Radcliffe.
