Record attendance at African Championships - 11th Congress of CAAA supports Nebiolo for re-election

26 August, 1998

MONTE CARLO - Monaco - With the record participation of 39 federations, the African Athletic Championships in Dakar, Senegal (August 18-23) were bigger than ever and especially dramatic because the African Confederation of Amateur Athletics (CAAA) had decided to select its team for the IAAF World Cup in September from winners in Dakar. The action was broadcast by the pan-European TV channel Eurosport and there were some superlative performances from stars like Seun Ogunkoya (9.94 -100m) Frank Fredericks (19.99 - 200m), Falilat Ogunkoya (22.22 - 200m) and world champions like Daniel Komen (13:35.70 - 5000m) and Marius Corbett (79.82 - Javelin).

The CAAA held its 11th Congress immediately after the Championships and delegates of Africa's member federation unanimously agreed to propose IAAF President Primo Nebiolo for re-election at next year's IAAF Congress in Seville. Dr Nebiolo had flown straight from the European Championships in Budapest to attend the Congress at the request of CAAA President Lamine Diack.
