| American Duane Ross, was the fastest man in the semifinals of the 110 metres hurdles, by winning the first heat in 13.14. Ross, the fourth entrant from the US, had a very convincing victory by a margin of 16/100 over German Florian Schwarthoff (13.30). Third on this heat was Cuban Yoel Hernandez with 13.32, same time as German Falk Balzer. The second heat was taken by the 1999 Pan American champion, Anier Garcia with 13.18. World record holder, Colin Jackson (GBR) was second with 13.19, while American Tony Dees was third in 13.30. The last qualifier from this heat was Belgium's Jonathan N'Senga (13.47), who didn't run faster than fifth, sixth and seventh from the first heat, Peter Coghlan from Ireland (13.35), Erik Batte from Cuba (13.40) and Robin Korving from the Netherlands (13.45). Two times World champion, and 1996 Olympic gold medalist, American Allen Johnson didn't start in the second heat due to injury. |

El norteamericano Duane Ross logro el mejor tiempo en las
semifinales de los 110 metros vallas, al imponerse en la primera serie. Ross, el cuarto
inscrito de Estados Unidos, dio una gran exhibicion, venciendo por amplio margen (16/100)
al aleman Florian Schwarthoff (13.30). Tercero en esta serie fue el cubano Yoel Hernandez
con 13.32, el mismo tiempo que el tambien aleman Falk Balzer. La segunda serie fue ganada
por el campeon panamericano en Winnipeg 99, el cubano Anier Garcia en 13.18. El
plusmarquista mundial, el britanico Colin Jackson, fue segundo con 13.19, mientras que el
estadounidense Tony Dees fue tercero con 13.30. El restante atleta en esta en esta serie
en clasificar para la final, fue el belga Jonathan N'Senga (13.47) quien a su vez fue mas
lento que el quinto, sexto y septimo clasificados en la primera serie, el irlandes Peter
Coghlan (13.35), el cubano Erik Batte (13.40) y el holandes Robin Korving (13.45). El
doble campeon mundial y actual campeon olimpico, el estadounidense Allen Johnson no partio
