12 January 2000 - Olympic bronze medallist Joyce Chepchumba was surprised in the last few metres of the Dubai 10k today (Friday), the Kenyan losing in the sprint to the European junior 5000 metres champion, Tezata Surekli of Turkey, who clocked 33min 54sec, two seconds ahead of the Kenyan.
The 21 year old Surekli, who was born in Ethiopia said afterwards that she always felt she had a chance of beating Chepchumba. "She is a marathon runner," said Surekli. "This distance is better for me, and it was not long enough for her".
Chepchumba, who is aiming for a third London Marathon victory in April said, "It was very difficult, Ive only been training for five days since my holiday, and I was taking it like training. But 33min is good for me, its good for a start".
In the Dubai Marathon, Ramilya Burungulova broke her course record, repeating her win of last year, with 2hr 37min 07sec. But in the mens races, it was Kenya all the way, albeit Wilson Kibet cut it fine in winning the marathon, also for the second consecutive year. Kibet was the last to arrive in Dubai, just 24 hours before the race, having missed his plane from Kenya. And he left his winning sprint to the last 100 metres, rebuffing the challenge from Ethiopian Eticha Tesfaye.
Kibet from Eldoret, the heartland of Kenyan distance running, won in 2.13.36, just one second ahead of Tesfaye after their scintillating sprint in the final straight. There were seven Kenyans in the top ten, and the mens 10k was won by another Kenyan, 17 year old Phalis Kimani, after another great sprint with Britains Andy Coleman. Kimani clocked 30.39 to Colemans 30.40.
The races are held on Friday, the Islamic weekend, and begin at 7am to avoid temperatures, which even in the Gulf winter reached 22 degrees by 9.30am.
