Khannouchi, Ndereba win Kyoto half marathon

10 March 2002 – Kyoto, Japan - Khalid Khannouchi and Catherine Ndereba, the men's and
women's holders of the world fastest times in the marathon, coasted to easy victories at
the Kyoto City half marathon on Sunday.
Morocco-born American Khannouchi, who clocked the fastest full marathon record of 2hr 05min 42sec at the Chicago marathon in October 1999, raced ahead of the rest of the field at around the half way mark to win the men's race on his Japanese race debut in 1:02:16.
Valentine Orare of Kenya finished second in 1:02:50 and Japan's Naosato Yoshimura was third one second further back.
Kenya's Ndereba, who holds the women's world best time of 2:18:47, also from Chicago last October, proved head and shoulders above the rest of the field winning the women's race in 1:08:48.
Japanese-based Esther Wanjiru, also from Kenya, took second place in 1:10:14, followed by Japan's Mio Kiuchi who finished third in 1:11:37.
