Maryam Yussuf Jamal last week’s winner of the famous Cinque Mulini cross country race in Italy yesterday led a Bahraini sweep of the medals in the women’s 8km race in the Asian Cross Country Championships which were held at the beautiful Al Bisharat Golf Club in Amman, Jordan.
The 9th edition of the biennial event, held on Saturday (10 Mar), witnessed the Bahrain team’s first title in a category hitherto dominated by Japan. Jamal finished in 26:29, a full seven seconds ahead of compatriot Karima Jassim, with another Bahraini Nadia Ejjafini Aljvini in third.
The Japanese team finished second behind Bahrain in the team classification, while China took third spot.
The men’s 12km event was won in 35:41 by Qatar’s Abdullah Ahmad Hassan, the 2005 World Cross Country long course bronze medallist. A distant Surendra Singh of India came second in 36:43.
