1 September 2000 - Berlin - The first gilt-edged performance of a golden night at the ISTAF Golden League meeting here came from Marion Jones in the women’s 100 metres, where the American was a class apart.
After a good start, by her own standards, Jones was a little slow into her running, and was matched to 30 metres by the Bahamian, Savetheda Fynes. But then Jones’s after-burners kicked in.
The 1997 and 1999 IAAF world champion lengthened her stride and crossed the line three metres clear of Fynes, stopping the clock at 10.78sec, equalling her own season’s best. Fynes placed second in 11.03.
"I feel really good after this superb run," said the 24-year-old Jones, who has said that she wants to win five gold medals at the Sydney Olympic Games.
"The cool evening didn’t really suit me, but this is the fastest I have ever run in Berlin. I will go home tomorrow. Now, I am really looking forward to Sydney."
