Young runner Tiki Gelana was the overwhelming winner of the 2008 Confidence Women First 5km on Sunday (23).

The 22-year-old, who is a cousin of former Olympic and World marathon champion Gezhagne Abera, took control of the race at the 4km point to take victory in 16:02 ahead of Amane Godana with African junior 3000m silver medallist Bezunesh Urgessa finishing third.

It was the first women first 5km victory for the road runner who finished fourth in 2006 and fifth a year earlier and an impressive one given that she beat more accomplished runners.

Around 8000 runners took in Ethiopia’s women-only road race that saw electronic chip timing technology applied for the first time in Ethiopian athletics history.
