Youngster Korahubesh Etea shocked Marta Tegabe, fourth over the girls 2000m steeplechase at the IAAF World Youth Championships in Ostrava, Czech Republic last year, in the women’s 3000m at the 6th Ethiopian Short and Middle Distance Championships (17-19 January 2008), a test event organized by the Ethiopian Athletics Federation (EAF) for the 16th CAA African Championships in April 2008.
Tegabe was very much in contention with three laps of the race left, but was easily overtaken by Etea and Bertukan Fente at the 1000m point. The front pair exchanged leads continuously until the final 200m when Etea emerged victorious with a dramatic sprint finish that clinched victory in 10:19.99.
In the men’s corresponding event, Prisons Police’s Yassin Mohammed put in a dominant performance throughout the seven-and-half-lap contest to take victory in 8:58.07, more than seven seconds ahead of Tadele Geremew with Ayele Getachew taking third.
In the men’s 10,000m walk, Degefe Deboko took the lead at the halfway point before storming to his second victory in as many years.
