29 August 2002Monte CarloThe Moroccan Athlete Brahim Boulami has recorded a positive "A" sample result for the forbidden substance EPO, on 15 August, as part of the IAAF's pre-competition testing for the substance. Both blood and urine were taken, according IAAF Rules and internationally accepted procedure. The sample was tested at the IAAF accredited laboratory in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Both the athlete and the Moroccan Federation were informed about this test result confidentially and the athlete immediately invoked his right to request the B sample to be tested to confirm the "A" result. Regrettably, the Moroccan Federation chose to issue a press release confirming the "A" sample before the "B" sample could be tested.
Although Mr Boulami was intending to compete at the Ivo Van Damme Memorial meeting tomorrow night, considering the circumstances, he volunteered to withdraw from the event.
The IAAF understands and endorses the athlete's decision. It also wishes to make clear that although Brahim Boulami has tested positive, until the B sample is tested, and confirms the A result, he is not considered to have committed a doping offence under IAAF rules.
Monte Carlo – L’athlète marocain Brahim Boulami a été testé positif à l’EPO sur l’échantillon ‘’A’’ prélevé le 15 août lors des contrôles avant compétition conduits par l’IAAF pour rechercher cette substance prohibée. Des prélèvements sanguins et urinaires ont été effectués en accord avec les règles de l’IAAF définies dans le cadre de la procédure internationale. Les échantillons ont été analysés au laboratoire agréé par l’IAAF à Lausanne, en Suisse.
L’athlète et la Fédération Marocaine ont été informés du résultat du prélèvement de manière confidentielle et l’athlète a immédiatement demandé, comme le droit l’y autorise, à ce que l’échantillon ‘’B’’ soit analysé avant de confirmer le test positif. De manière regrettable, la Fédération a jugé bon de publier un communiqué de presse confirmant l’analyse de l’échantillon ‘‘A’’ avant que le ‘’B’’ ne soit testé.
Aussi, bien que Monsieur Boulami ait eu l’intention de prendre part demain soir au Memorial Ivo Van Damme, eu égards aux circonstances, il a préféré annuler sa participation à l’épreuve.
L’IAAF comprend et approuve la décision de l’athlète. Elle affirme clairement que bien que Brahim Boulami ait été déclaré positif, l’athlète n’est pas considéré comme ayant enfreint les règles de l’IAAF contre le dopage tant que l’échantillon ‘’B’’ n’a pas rendu son verdict et confirmé le résultat de l’échantillon ‘’A’’.
