Berlin, Germany – He’s huge, brown and furry, and has an air-conditioning system implanted in his head.
Berlino the Bear, the official mascot of the 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics, Berlin, Germany (15 to 23 August 2009), today met the members of the IAAF Council who are in the German capital for a two day meeting.
Just as the fully refurbished 1936 Olympic stadium which will host the championships is at the top rung of modern sporting facilities world-wide, so Berlino, whose name was decided by a public poll in the city of Berlin, is a ‘state of the art’ example of what a mascot should be.
As fun as the proposition of wearing a mascot suit might sound in reality the job has never been something very enjoyable, as the weight and warmth of most costumes has made the occupation a sweaty sauna like experience.
But no more!
Berlino with an electrical air extraction unit attached inside the outfit and a recessed chimney like hole cut in the top of its head to allow for the required air flow shall for ever be a sweat free zone. Luxury has come to the world of the event mascot, another first for Berlin 2009!
Berlino came to the Council meeting today as a member of the delegation from the Local Organising Committee who this morning presented a progress report detailing their preparations for hosting the IAAF Congress and the championships in the city this summer.
Berlino, who in recent weeks has been doing the national rounds of celebratory parties and public events meeting such German sporting icons as Ralf Schumacher and Boris Becker, is an important element of the championships promotion.
Posters, road show, medals, stamps and coins
Other publicity elements include a national “18-1” Mega-Light poster campaign across 66 German cities and towns with a population of more than 100,000 inhabitants.
A promotional road show around the country marking the 100 days to go countdown will start in Bonn on 7 May.
And in the coming weeks the official medals, stamps and 10 euro coin of the championships will be presented, and the extensive schedule of press conferences in German embassies around the world will continue.
No free tickets
Approximately 400,000 ticket information-flyers printed in German and English have been distributed around sports and social events, and fairs in Germany.
There will be no free tickets for Berlin 2009, and of the 500,000 on offer for sale approximately 210,000 have already been purchased which at this stage in the build-up is better than for any previous World championships.
Volunteers
The championships need a volunteer workforce of 3500 people and to-date 5000 have applied and 3800 have been interviewed. Training of the volunteers will begin in April.

L'ours Berlino, la mascotte officielle des 12èmes Championnats du Monde d'Athlétisme de l'IAAF, Berlin, Allemagne (15 au 23 août 2009), a rencontré aujourd'hui les membres du Conseil de l'IAAF, présents dans la capitale allemande pour deux jours de réunions.
Berlino, dont le nom a été choisi après un sondage auprès des Berlinois, est – à l'image du stade olympique de 1936 qui, totalement rénové, est désormais parmi les plus modernes qui soient – à la pointe de la technologie.
Car, bien que le fait de porter un costume de mascotte puisse apparaître amusant, le fait est que c'est un travail qui est loin d'être reposant, le poids et l'épaisseur de la majorité des costumes donnant l'impression de se retrouver coincé dans une étuve.
Ce n'est pas le cas pour Berlino! Celui-ci bénéficie en effet, installé dans sa tête, d'une petite cheminée d'aération et d'un moteur électrique facilitant l'évacuation de la chaleur et favorisant la circulation de l'air. Une approche luxueuse de l'univers de la mascotte d'événements – encore une grande première pour Berlin 2009!
Berlino s'est présenté au Conseil ce matin en tant que membre d'une délégation du Comité organisateur local, venue présenter un rapport détaillé sur l'état d'avancée des préparations pour l'accueil du Congrès de l'IAAF et des championnats dans la capitale allemande cet été.
Berlino forme un élément crucial dans la campagne de promotion des championnats. Dans les dernières semaines il a ainsi effectué des apparitions publiques au travers du pays en compagnie de célébrités sportives de renom telles que Ralf Schumacher et Boris Becker.
Affiches, présentations itinérantes, médailles, timbres et pièces de monnaie
Parmi les autres éléments promotionnels une campagne d'affichage a été déroulée sur le plan national, présente dans 66 villes avec des populations supérieures à 100 000 habitants.
Une tournée de promotion itinérante va partir de Bonn le 7 mai, pour marquer les cent jours avant l'épreuve.
Au cours des semaines à venir, des médailles, des timbres et des pièces de monnaie de dix euros au nom des championnats seront présentés, et les conférences de presse données dans les ambassades allemandes du monde entier vont se poursuivre.
Aucun billet gratuit
Environ 400 000 prospectus, en allemand et en anglais, comportant des informations sur la vente des billets ont été imprimés et distribués lors d'événements sportifs et de manifestations diverses au travers de l'Allemagne.
Aucun billet gratuit ne sera offert pour Berlin 2009, et près de 210 000 billets ont été prévendus, ce qui constitue le meilleur résultat de l'histoire des championnats à ce stade des préparations.
Volontaires
Les championnats vont faire appel à quelque 3500 volontaires pour l'organisation des compétitions; à date plus de 5000 personnes se sont déjà portées candidates et 3800 ont passé des entretiens. La formation des volontaires retenus va démarrer au mois d'avril.
