Norway’s 2004 and 2008 Olympic javelin champion Andreas Thorkildsen announced his retirement on Wednesday (11).
The six newly elected representatives of the IAAF Athletes’ Commission are as follows (listed in alphabetical order): Valerie Adams, Mutaz Essa Barshim, Yelena Isinbayeva, Koji Murofushi, Christian Olsson and Andreas Thorkildsen, the IAAF announced on Sunday (30).
There were three main topics of conversation at the ‘javelin special’ press conference ahead of the ExxonMobil Bislett Games IAAF Diamond League meeting in Oslo on Wednesday (11) – injuries, upsets to javelin’s world order, and Tero Pitkämäki’s baby boy, who was born yesterday.
Mention the Bislett Games to most athletics followers and invariably two events spring to mind: the Dream Mile, of course, and the men’s javelin.
Sandra Perkovic and Vitezslav Vesely are currently the world’s best in their events, but they are not the only gold medallists in the long throws at the Prefontaine Classic, the next leg of the 2014 IAAF Diamond League in Eugene on 31 May.
When you think of the javelin, you automatically think of Oslo and the ExxonMobil Bislett Games. The IAAF Diamond League meeting in Norway’s capital has a rich tradition in the event and the assembled field for 11 June will only add to that.
IAAF Ambassadors Kajsa Bergqvist and Andreas Thorkildsen visited the Hvidovre Stadion in the Copenhagen suburbs on Friday (28) to run a Kids’ Clinic for 24 teenage athletes from around the Danish capital.
