Chase Jackson became the newest member of the 21-metre club, throwing a North American shot put record of 21.02m at ISTAF, a World Athletics Continental Tour Silver meeting, in Berlin on Sunday (30).
That throw, which improved on Jackson’s previous US record of 20.95m set in June 2025 and the 20.96m North American record set by Cuba's Belsy Laza in 1992, was achieved in the first round of the competition. The two-time world champion backed it up with three other throws beyond 20 metres.
Jackson becomes only the second woman in 14 years to surpass the 21-metre mark after Dutch record-holder Jessica Schilder who threw 21.09m in May. It is the first time since 1990 that two women have thrown farther than 21 metres in the same year.
Canada’s two-time world indoor champion Sarah Mitton finished second in Berlin with 20.10m from the second round. Home star Yemisi Mabry, the Olympic champion, was third (19.73m).
“It was amazing. I have been waiting for a throw like this for so long,” said Jackson. “Having it on the first attempt was a relief. I am satisfied that I had such a good series. Now I will train here in Berlin before going to Brussels (for the Diamond League Final).”
Two-time European champion Julian Weber won the javelin on home soil, throwing 89.54m, while USA’s Olympic and world champion Valarie Sion won the discus (67.89m).
Australia’s Cameron Myers ran 3:30.96 to win the 1500m ahead of German record-holder Robert Farken in 3:31.73, while Ethiopia’s Nigist Getachew won the 800m in 1:58.04 and Germany’s Gesa Felicitas Krause the 2000m steeplechase in 5:56.79.
Two-time world champion Danielle Williams took the 100m hurdles in 12.78, while the 400m hurdles races were won by Rushell Clayton (53.72) and Emil Agyekum (48.18).
Kadrian Goldson (9.98) and Sabrina Dockery (11.13) won the 100m races, the long jump title went to Tyra Gittens (6.79m) and pole vault victory to Ernest John Obiena (5.82m).
Contesting select events in a ‘triathlon’ competition, world decathlon champion Leo Neugebauer went close to his PB with 58.54m in the discus.
Campbell throws 22.59m
Another impressive shot put performance highlighted the Grand Prix Brescia, also a World Athletics Continental Tour Silver meeting, on Sunday (30) as Rajindra Campbell threw a Jamaican record of 22.59m to move to joint 13th on the world all-time list.
The Olympic bronze medallist improved his previous national record of 22.44m set in June and beat home favourite Leonardo Fabbri, who threw 21.99m. Campbell also surpassed 22 metres with his two other valid throws.
Hungary’s Bence Halász threw 80.67m to win the men’s hammer, while DeAnna Price won the women’s competition with 74.50m
Bradley Franklin beat his US compatriots Cordell Tinch and Jamal Britt in the 110m hurdles, clocking 13.10 (-1.5m/s) to world champion Tinch’s 13.25 and Britt’s 13.29. Tobi Amusan topped the 100m hurdles in 12.56 (-1.7m/s).
World U20 bronze medallist Leendert Koekemoer won the 400m from lane one, running a South African U20 record of 44.52 to improve his previous best by four tenths of a second. He pipped Jonas Phijffers (44.61), beating a field that also included world bronze medallist Bayapo Ndori (44.79), 2012 Olympic champion Kirani James (44.92) and Olympic 200m champion Letsile Tebogo (45.34).
Another rising South African athlete won the men’s 100m, double 2024 world U20 champion Bayanda Walaza clocking 10.00 ahead of Courtney Lindsey (10.09) and Trayvon Bromell (10.16). Amy Hunt, who won four gold medals at the recent European Championships, also clinched a 100m win, clocking 11.06.
The women’s 400m ended in a photo finish, Nickisha Pryce beating Salwa Eid Naser by thousandths of a second as both athletes clocked 49.27. Shafiqua Maloney won the 800m (1:58.03), Favour Ofili the 200m (22.03), Dalilah Muhammad the 400m hurdles (53.36) and Thea LaFond the triple jump (14.50m).
Over at the Internationales Hochsprungmeeting Heilbronn, another World Athletics Continental Tour Silver event taking place on Sunday (30), Australia’s 2022 world champion Eleanor Patterson matched her PB of 2.02m to win the high jump.
Ukraine’s world record-holder Yaroslava Mahuchikh was second on 2.00m.
Alekna and Battocletti among winners in Bellinzona
Mykolas Alekna threw a meeting record of 71.50m to win the discus during the GalAthletics Bellinzona, another World Athletics Continental Tour Silver event, on Sunday (30).
The world record-holder, who also threw 71.07m and 69.06m, clinched victory ahead of Olympic champion Rojé Stona (68.14m).
Nadia Battocletti followed her 5000m and 10,000m double at the European Championships with another Italian record of 3:57.54 to win the 1500m. The top four all broke four minutes, Addison Wiley finishing second in 3:58.96.
Kayinsola Ajayi (9.91) and Tamari Davis (11.09) won the 100m races, while Christopher Morales-Williams surged late to pip Zakithi Nene in the 400m – 44.44 to 44.54.
World record-holder Ja’Kobe Tharp won the 110m hurdles in 13.15, while Rayniah Jones (12.44) won the 100m hurdles ahead of Megan Simmonds and Ditaji Kambundji. Bassem Hemeida clocked a PB of 47.56 to top the 400m hurdles.
Louey Ouerrat ran a meeting record of 1:43.57 to win the men’s 800m, while the women’s race was won by Rénelle Lamote in 1:58.55.
Another meeting record fell in the high jump as JuVaughn Harrison cleared 2.28m on his third attempt. Home favourite Angelica Moser cleared 4.77m to win the pole vault, while Jorinde van Klinken won the discus with a 66.86m throw.
