Build the skills that keep endurance events safe

The World Academy for Endurance Medicine trains the healthcare professionals who oversee medical care at World Athletics Label Road Races and other mass-participation endurance events. The Race Emergency Medicine Course (REMC) combines expert-led lectures, hands-on skill-building, and real race-day observation to prepare you for the unique demands of race medicine.

Level 1

Level 1 gives healthcare professionals the foundational knowledge and skills needed for endurance medicine and race medical operations — covering clinical care, event logistics, and leadership in delivering high-quality medical services. Participants are introduced to standardised concepts, procedures and protocols used across race medicine.

 

The course has two components:

• • eLearning module (6 hours) — completed independently before the in-person session. Includes one year of access to course modules, presentation videos, slides, and member-exclusive articles.
  • Two-day in-person workshop — including on-site observation during a race.

Completing both components earns the REMC Level 1 certification, valid for three years.

 

Who can join: Race Medical Directors and other healthcare professionals with a medical background. Places are capped at 30 participants to keep small-group collaboration effective, with priority given to Medical Directors of Label Races.

 

Cost: €500 standard fee. Free for Medical Directors of World Athletics Label Races.

 

 

Level 2

 

Level 2 is for Race Medical Directors who completed Level 1 within the past three years and need to renew their certification. It builds on Level 1 foundations and expands into advanced topics, including:

• • Risk assessment and mitigation strategies
  • Contingency planning
  • Mass participation and disaster medicine
  • Mentoring with members of the World Academy for Endurance Medicine Expert and Advisory Board

 

The course has two components:

• • eLearning module (10 hours) — completed before the in-person session, including submission of a Race Medical Operations Plan.
  • Two-day in-person workshop — including a dedicated session with a World Academy Expert/Advisory Board member to review and discuss your submitted plan.

Level 2 is designed to deepen professional expertise, foster peer-to-peer learning, and strengthen the international community of Race Medical Directors through shared best practice.

 

Group size: Capped at 15 participants, with priority given to Medical Directors of Label Races.

Completing both components earns the REMC Level 2 certification, valid for three years.

 

Cost: €500 standard fee. Free for Medical Directors of World Athletics Label Races.

 

 

REMC Education Grant

From January 2027, the World Academy for Endurance Medicine is introducing the REMC Education Grant for REMC Level 1. Alongside the existing fee waiver for Race Medical Directors of World Athletics Label Races, up to five grant places will be awarded per course to young professionals building a career in road race medicine — reducing their Level 1 course fee from €500 to €100. The grant does not apply to Level 2.

 

 

Who can apply

To be considered for a grant place, applicants must meet all of the following criteria:

 

1. 1. Age: under 35 years old at the time of application.
   2. Clinical healthcare background: have completed a degree or professional qualification in a clinical healthcare field (for example, medicine, nursing, athletic training, or physical therapy), or currently be in clinical training in one of these fields (for example, residents, MDs, student nurses, ATC or PT trainees).
   3. Road race involvement: current or previous involvement in road race medical operations. World Athletics Label and non-label races both qualify equally.

 

Applying has two steps:

Step 1 — complete the online application form (linked below), which collects your personal and eligibility information and your consent, and asks you to write your motivation letter directly in the form, addressing why you're applying, your future career plans, your current and future involvement in the road running sector, your previous experience in this area, how participating in REMC will benefit your professional development, and your willingness to stay involved with the World Academy for Endurance Medicine.

 

Step 2 — after submitting the form, email the following to info@endurancemedicine.org, using 'REMC Education Grant – [Your Full Name]' as the subject line: a valid identification document, and proof of your clinical healthcare degree/qualification (medicine, nursing, athletic training, physical therapy, etc.) or proof of current clinical training enrolment. Optional but encouraged in the same email: a supporting letter from a Race Medical Director, National Athletic Federation, race organiser, or clinical mentor.

Applications are only considered complete once both the form and the email have been received.

 

Selection

Up to five grant places are awarded per course. Applications are reviewed against the eligibility criteria above and the quality and completeness of the motivation letter and supporting documents.
