The World Academy for Endurance Medicine is committed to upskilling healthcare professionals overseeing medical support at World Athletics Label Road Races and other mass-participation endurance events around the world with its Race Emergency Medicine Course (REMC).
This course provides participants with the opportunity to improve their knowledge and race-day medical management skills with lectures, skill-building activities, and race-day observation.
The Race Emergency Medicine Course (REMC) is structured in two consecutive levels: Level 1 and Level 2.
Level 1 provides healthcare professionals with the foundational knowledge and skills required for endurance medicine and race medical operations. It covers both clinical care and the logistical aspects of mass-participation events, while also developing leadership skills for delivering high-quality medical services. Participants are introduced to standardized concepts, procedures, and protocols in race medicine.
The course consists of two components:
1. eLearning module (6 hours) – to be completed autonomously before the in-person session. Participants receive one year of access to the modules, presentation videos, slides, and member-exclusive articles.
2. Two-day in-person workshop – including on-site observation during a race.
Completion of both components is required to receive the REMC Level 1 certification, valid for three years.
The course is open to Race Medical Directors as well as other healthcare professionals, but also other people involved in mass participation endurance events without a medical brackground. Participation is capped at 30 individuals to ensure effective small-group collaboration.
Level 2 is designed for Race Medical Directors who have completed Level 1 within the past three years and need to renew their certification. It builds on the foundations of Level 1 and expands into advanced topics, including:
risk assessment and mitigation strategies
contingency planning
mass participation and disaster medicine
mentoring with members of the World Academy for Endurance Medicine Expert and Advisory Board
The course includes two components:
eLearning module (10 hours) – completed before the in-person session, and requiring submission of a Race Medical Operations Plan.
Two-day in-person workshop – including a dedicated session with a World Academy for Endurance Medicine Expert/Advisory Board member to review and discuss the submitted plan.
The objectives of Level 2 are to deepen professional expertise, foster peer-to-peer learning, and strengthen the international community of Race Medical Directors through shared best practices.
Completion of both components is required to receive the REMC Level 2 certification, valid for three years. Participation is free of charge for Medical Directors of World Athletics Label Races.
Medical Directors of World Athletics Label Road Races must complete the REMC once every three years as part of their continuing medical education.
Registration is free for Medical Directors of WA Label Races.
Race organizers must provide the name of their certified Medical Director when applying for a World Athletics Label.
Priority admission is given to Medical Directors of Label Races; additional places are offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
