Some studies report that as many as 70% of runners are injured in a given year, but if running were truly so injurious then it would not be so popular. A more accurate statement
is that running injury rates vary enormously by population, generally following a U-shaped curve with the highest rates among novices who rapidly increase their mileage at one extreme, and among marathoners and competitive runners at the other extreme, with the majority of runners in between experiencing lower rates of injury.
