Competition at the Stade Louis II
To celebrate this year’s 30th anniversary of the inauguration of the headquarters of World Athletics in Monaco, the World Athletics Heritage Plaque has been jointly awarded to the Principality of Monaco and the Federation Monegasque d’Athletisme.
His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco received the plaque from Sebastian Coe, the President of World Athletics, at a ceremony during the Herculis Diamond League meeting on Friday (12).
“Despite the small size of the principality and its population, Monaco has consistently punched above its weight as an organiser of major athletics events, delivering a level of organisational excellence which is to be applauded,” said Coe.
“World Athletics is especially grateful to the Monegasque Athletics Federation and its president HSH Prince Albert for their profound and enthusiastic commitment to the promotion and development of our sport. World Athletics has felt very much at home in Monaco during the last three decades. Thank you.”

The World Athletics Heritage Plaque is a location-based recognition, awarded for “an outstanding contribution to the worldwide history and development of the sport of track & field athletics and of out of stadia athletics disciplines such as cross country, mountain, road, trail and ultra-running, and race walking.”
The award of the World Athletics Heritage Plaque to Monaco and the Federation Monegasque d’Athletisme is respectively made in the categories of ‘City’ and ‘Competition’.
World Athletics specifically salutes Monaco’s consistent record of hosting outstandingly successful international athletics events including:
- The annual Herculis Diamond League, ranked as the world’s best meeting in 1998, 2008, 2011, 2014, 2015, 2018 and 2020
- Two editions of the Grand Prix Final in 1989 and 1995
- Three editions of the World Athletics Final in 2003, 2004 and 2005
- The World 15km Road Race for Women in 1987
- And many other international road events from the marathon down to 5km, at which three world records have been set to date.
The plaque will be permanently displayed outside the main entrance to the Stade Louis II.
