The annual São Silvestre Race was founded in 1925 by Cásper Líbero, its patron. From 1925 until 1944 the race went from the regional to the national level, 1945 marked the first edition in an international level with the presence of athletes from Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay. Brazil was the winner of the first and second edition of the international era but from 1947 with the victory of Oscar Moreira (Uruguay), the foreign dominion lasted 34 years until the victory of José João da Silva in 1980. A mass field was added in 1979 and today the number of participants is limited to 30,000.
