Sir Roger Bannister (GBR) 1929 - 2018
On 6 May 1954 in Oxford, England, Roger Bannister, coached by Franz Stampfl and paced by Christopher Chataway and Chris Brasher, became the first man to ran one mile in under four minutes Mile (3:59.4).
Bannister also became European 1500m champion and Empire & Commonwealth Mile champion in the same year. His epic battle in that latter race with Australia’s John Landy, who in June had broken Bannister’s world record, became known as the ‘Miracle Mile’.
