  • 4-time Olympic gold medallist;

At the age of 18, Betty Cuthbert became known as “The Golden Girl” of the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne winning both the 100m and 200m and anchoring the Australian 4x100m gold medal relay team which set world records in the heats and final. A hamstring injury ruined her 1960 Olympic Games but with the 400m being introduced onto the women's programme at the 1964 Olympics, Cuthbert decided to focus on that distance and in the final was never headed from the gun to tape.
