Known originally as the Athens Classic Marathon the annual race began in 1972. The tough course which is uphill from 10km and 31km is based on the legendary run of Pheidippides, who in 490BC ran from the Battle of Marathon to Athens to announce the Greeks' victory over the Persian invaders. The Authentic, which traces its origins to the 1896 Olympic Marathon, begins in the town of Marathon and finishes at the Panathinaiko Stadium in the Greek capital, the finish for the 1896 and 2004 Olympic Games Marathons.
