The ‘Modern Athlete & Coach’ journal was founded in 1955 under the editorship of Jess Jarver by the SAAAA Coaching Committee and was supported by the National Fitness Council of South Australia.

The journal, which was published in A4 format until 1963, started as a small, informal publication. The editions were small but steadily grew, as did its reputation.

From 1972 to the present the Australian Track & Field Coaches Association (ATFCA) has published the journal which is now an electronic publication.

Jess Jarver remained editor until 2002. He was succeeded from 2003 to 2006 by Cliff Mallett, ever since which Glynis Nunn, 1984 Olympic Heptathlon champion, has been editor.
