Sustainability

We aim to set a benchmark for international events by implementing best practices on sustainability, thereby minimising the environmental impact.

We are using the guidance of World Athletics’ Athletics for a Better World Standard to inform our overall planning for the event, taking into consideration the environmental impact of the event and taking steps to reduce our carbon footprint.

We have been inspired by the initiatives adopted at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest and will continue to promote World Athletics’ commitment to a sustainable future for athletics.

We have set an ambitious target to achieve the highest ever level of recognition for sustainability within World Athletics’ ‘Athletics for a Better World’ standard framework and are committed to embedding sustainability into our plans to deliver a world-class event, without compromising the needs of future generations.

Our sustainability plans also align with the Scottish Government’s goal for Net-Zero by 2045 and Glasgow’s Net Zero goal by 2030. Our initiatives will promote environmentally friendly living and highlight the steps individuals can take to reduce their carbon footprint.

Initiatives include:

Digital first approach – We are working to a ‘digital first’ approach in our everyday work, reducing the need for print as well as encouraging sustainable methods of travel to work.

Litter picking - To protect biodiversity and promote physical activity, we will host litter-picking events around the East End of Glasgow throughout February 2024. Participants can walk, jog or wheel as we make Glasgow cleaner. Two of these sessions will involve local primary schools, Dalmarnock Primary and Riverbank Primary. Students and community members can do their part to clean surrounding areas and support local wildlife by ensuring no plastic is left on the ground.

Reduction in food waste - As part of our sustainability effort, we will be working as a team to reduce food waste. After the Championships, we will be donating our leftover food to Baltic Street Adventure Playground to ensure no food goes to landfill.

Carbon Literacy Training - Our registered volunteers will have access to carbon literacy modules developed by Scottish Business Climate Collaboration and Zero Waste Scotland. Those interested will have the opportunity to learn about the effects of carbon, how to calculate a carbon footprint and how to develop sustainable living habits.
