World champion Haruka Kitaguchi added the Olympic title to her medal collection by winning the women&rsquo;s javelin at the Paris 2024 Games on Saturday (10).
In so doing, she won Japan&rsquo;s only athletics gold of these Games. She also becomes the first Japanese woman to win an Olympic medal in a field event.
Her opening effort of 65.80m stood up as the best mark of the night. South Africa&rsquo;s Jo-Ane van Dyk took silver with 63.93m, just 25 centimetres ahead of Czechia&rsquo;s Nikola Ogrodnikova.
Kitaguchi, who memorably won gold at last year&rsquo;s World Championships with her final throw, this time made her intentions clear from the outset, taking an early lead with her opening effort of 65.80m.

By the end of the first round, she had a lead of more than three metres as Spain&rsquo;s Yulenmis Aguilar sat in second place with 62.78m, just ahead of Australia&rsquo;s Kathryn Mitchell (62.63m).
World silver medallist Flor Denis Ruiz Hurtado moved into second place with her second-round throw of 63.00m. The Colombian was passed in round three by three women: Van Dyk (63.93m), Ogrodnikova (63.68m) and Croatia&rsquo;s 2016 Olympic champion Sara Kolak (63.40m).
Greece&rsquo;s 2022 European champion Elina Tzengko and world bronze medallist Mackenzie Little of Australia did not make it past the half-way stage, managing best throws of 61.85m and 60.32m respectively.
There were no improvements in the fourth or fifth rounds, though Kitaguchi backed up her leading mark with a 64.73m throw with her penultimate effort.
In the final round, Kolak produced another strong throw, but her 63.04m was no improvement, keeping the Croatian in fourth. Ogrodnikova and Van Dyk were next up, but once again neither woman improved and so they finished third and second respectively.
Kitaguchi, confirmed as champion, took to the runway for her final attempt. Her javelin sailed out to about 60 metres but she wandered through the line and celebrated her victory.
"I cannot believe this, this wasn&rsquo;t easy for me," said Kitaguchi. "I couldn&rsquo;t train well in the lead-up to the Games, but my physio and my team believed in me. Without their help, I wouldn't have won gold today."

World champion Haruka Kitaguchi added the Olympic title to her medal collection by winning the women’s javelin at the Paris 2024 Games on Saturday (10).

Kitaguchi lands second global javelin title with Olympic gold in Paris

Faith Kipyegon underlined her status as the queen of the 1500m, bagging her third successive Olympic title at the distance at the Paris 2024 Games on Saturday (10), becoming the first woman to win three Olympic golds in a single track discipline.
Each stride she made on the purple track of the packed Stade de France took her closer to her legendary status. Three-time world 1500m champion and world record-holder, Kipyegon produced a fearless run on the last lap to clock 3:51.29, taking two seconds off the Olympic record she set in Tokyo three years ago.
As the 30-year-old Kenyan crossed the line, she soaked in the moment, her eyes closed, mouth and hands open. She then signalled the crowd to cheer her on and punched the air.
&ldquo;It's a big, big achievement,&rdquo; said Kipyegon, who took silver over 5000m earlier in the Games. &ldquo;I was really looking forward to defending my title and I had a dream. It&rsquo;s amazing to me that I completed it. I'm so, so happy. This is history. I managed to make history. I've done it. This is an amazing honour; to win the gold medal in the 1500m was my key target.&rdquo;
World 2000m record-holder Jessica Hull of Australia overtook world road mile champion Diribe Welteji to take silver, clocking 3:52.56 as Great Britain&rsquo;s Georgia Bell also passed Welteji close to the finish to earn bronze with a national record of 3:52.61.

&ldquo;I envisioned it being a battle, four of us at the top of the straight,&rdquo; said Hull. &ldquo;I was like, 'I&rsquo;m not going to be the one going home without a medal'. To see Georgia (Bell) come through, it&rsquo;s pretty incredible. We&rsquo;ve just come second and third behind the greatest of all time.&rdquo;
Having doubled up with the 5000m, Kipyegon ran the heats and the semifinals of the 1500m doing just enough to advance through each round.
"After the disappointment in the 5000m (first being disqualified and then having her silver medal reinstated after an appeal), it took a lot of energy from me,&rdquo; said Kipyegon. &ldquo;I didn't sleep until yesterday. It was like, 'What is going on?'&rdquo;
Gudaf Tsegay, who earlier this year ran 3:50.30, was expected to be one of Kipyegon&rsquo;s biggest threats, but the Ethiopian had already contested the 5000m and 10,000m, finishing outside of the medals in both finals.
But with so many other women in the field who have broken 4:00 this year, it was no surprise that it took an Olympic record from Kipyegon to win.
Tsegay set the early pace, followed by USA&rsquo;s Elle St Pierre, Bell and Welteji while Kipyegon opted to sit back. A lead pack of eight women emerged before Kipyegon made her move into second place with Hull tracking the Kenyan.
When the bell rang, Kipyegon took command of the race with Welteji and Hull right behind as Tsegay &ndash; just as she had done in the closing stages of the 5000m and 10,000m &ndash; started to fade.
Kipyegon&rsquo;s turn of pace earned her a seventh global title at senior level &ndash; another golden addition to the collection for her daughter Alyn to hang around her neck.

Kipyegon claims historic third 1500m title in Olympic record in Paris

Only four days after his kick wasn&rsquo;t enough to reach the podium in the 1500m, Norway&rsquo;s Jakob Ingebrigtsen stormed through the final lap of the men&rsquo;s 5000m at a pace no one could match to win gold at the Paris Olympics on Saturday (10).
With a final lap of 53.2 seconds that included running the last 200m in 26.5, Ingebrigtsen won gold in a season&rsquo;s best of 13:13.66, ahead of silver medallist Ronald Kwemoi of Kenya (13:15.04), who earned Kenya&rsquo;s first medal in the event since 2012. Grant Fisher of the United States was third in 13:15.13, becoming the first US man ever to win medals in both the 5000m and 10,000m at a single Olympics.
It is the second consecutive Olympics in which Ingebrigtsen has earned a gold medal, joining his 1500m gold from Tokyo. It is also the third consecutive global championship in which Ingebrigtsen has not won the 1500m but rebounded to claim victory at 5000m.
Refocusing after an earlier disappointment &ldquo;is a big part of sports,&rdquo; Ingebrigtsen said. &ldquo;I think many of the greatest athletes have defeats that will haunt them for the rest of their lives, but hopefully, the reward of accomplishing things and creating memories outweighs them.&rdquo;
Ingebrigtsen believed the race&rsquo;s pace would be slightly faster than it started, and Ethiopia&rsquo;s Biniam Mehary and Addisu Yihune were leading a 22-man final as late as 4400m when compatriot Hagos Gebrhiwet created a one-stride lead on the field with a sprint to the front. Ingebrigtsen was one of the few who tried to immediately match the move and lurked in second as Gebrhiwet led entering the final lap.

&ldquo;I caught up with him and felt strong at that point,&rdquo; Ingebrigtsen said. &ldquo;That&rsquo;s the thing about the 5K. It&rsquo;s all about spending your energy wisely and making good decisions.&rdquo;
Ingebrigtsen took the lead with 200 metres to go and glanced at the scoreboard while rounding the bend to gauge his lead. Kwemoi came on strong and Fisher was next, improving from sixth to third in the final 80 metres. Fisher is the first US man ever to earn medals in both the 5000m and 10,000m at a single Olympics.
As the lead pack came off the final turn &ldquo;every few steps I realised, I&rsquo;m getting closer, I&rsquo;m getting closer,&rdquo; Fisher said. &ldquo;With 100 to go, I looked up and thought, third isn&rsquo;t that far away and I&rsquo;m moving nicely.&rdquo;
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s super validating. People say medals can&rsquo;t be taken away and that&rsquo;s the one thing that was missing.&rdquo;
Great Britain&rsquo;s George Mills, Mike Foppen of the Netherlands and Dominic Lobalu all were added to the final following a pile-up of bodies in the semifinal&rsquo;s final 100m that left competitors tripping and falling over one another while jostling for position. The unpredictability extended to another semifinal as well, when USA&rsquo;s Abdihamid Nur fell on the home straight. A jury of appeals later determined that Nur would not advance but Australia's Stewart McSweyn and France's Yann Schrub would. The rulings created a super-sized final that included 22 men.
In the final, Lobalu finished fourth, in 13:15.27. After leading for stretches of the final Gebrhiwet finished fifth, Mehary in sixth and Yihune in 14th.

Ingebrigtsen turns 1500m disappointment into 5000m gold at Paris Olympics

USA's Masai Russell won a fierce battle for the 100m hurdles title at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games on Saturday (10), dipping to victory in 12.33.
Getting gold by 0.01, it took a photo finish to decide the medallists, as Cyrena Samba-Mayela delighted the home crowd by securing silver for France in 12.34 and Puerto Rico's defending champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn got bronze in 12.36.
In the deepest women&rsquo;s 100m hurdles final in Olympic history, Nadine Visser and Grace Stark finished just three thousandths of a second apart as they both clocked 12.43 &ndash; Visser finishing a fraction ahead for fourth place.&nbsp;
Russell might only have won two finals in 2024, but she won the ones that mattered the most.&nbsp;
After an indoor season that included a fourth-place finish in the 60m hurdles at the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow, the 24-year-old&rsquo;s path to Paris included 100m hurdles victory at the US Olympic Team Trials in Eugene where she clocked a world-leading 12.25 to move to joint fourth on the world all-time list.
She then won her heat in Paris in 12.53 and finished second to Camacho-Quinn in her semifinal in 12.42.
In the final Russell lined up in lane five, next to her teammates Stark and Johnson. Russell knocked the second hurdle but didn&rsquo;t seem to lose too much momentum, but Johnson hit the next barrier hard, ending her medal hopes.

As the rest of the field stormed away, Russell was alongside Stark and Camacho-Quinn, slightly behind Visser and Samba-Mayela, but she negotiated the final two barriers well and reached the finish line level with Samba-Mayela and Camacho-Quinn.
Samba-Mayela put her hands to her head and they all looked up at the results board, waiting for the positions to be confirmed. As Russell saw her name appear first, she jumped up and down and paced the track, while Samba-Mayela fell to the track in delight and was congratulated by Camacho-Quinn.
&ldquo;I just took off running, because it's literally what I imagined,&rdquo; said Russell. &ldquo;I could barely sleep last night. I was tossing and turning because I kept dreaming about my name coming up No.1. When it actually came up, I was like: 'stop playing me, stop playing me'. Because so many people were saying so many crazy things about me, as they always do when you're not doing what they believe you're capable of.
&ldquo;I just proceeded to shut out the noise, focused on what I could control. It was truly a dream come true.&rdquo;
Samba-Mayela&rsquo;s performance secured the first athletics medal of the Paris 2024 Games for the host nation.
&ldquo;It's just a lot of amazing emotions and certainly a lot of pleasure,&rdquo; said the 2022 world indoor 60m hurdles champion. &ldquo;I thought that in this moment today I would just be stressed, but it wasn't the case. I was lifted by all these people and all the pleasure of sport.&rdquo;
Such was the standard of the event in Paris, the final did not feature two-time world champion Danielle Williams or world record-holder Tobi Amusan, as their competition came to an end in the semifinals.

Russell gets Olympic 100m hurdles gold after close race in Paris

In a year that has produced many of history&rsquo;s fastest men&rsquo;s 800m times, Emmanuel Wanyonyi needed another blazing performance to win Olympic gold at the Paris 2024 Games on Saturday (10).
With his winning time of 1:41.19, the Kenyan became the third-fastest performer in history, behind only world record-holder David Rudisha and Wilson Kipketer. Rudisha&rsquo;s record of 1:40.90, which doubles as the Olympic record from his victory in London in 2012, still stands.&nbsp;
At the age of 20, Wanyonyi became the youngest ever winner of the event in Olympic history, leading a race of unprecedented depth.&nbsp;
He held off Canada&rsquo;s Marco Arop, the world champion, whose kick off the final turn put him ahead of Wanyonyi briefly before Wanyonyi took back the lead in the final steps. Arop ran a North American record of 1:41.20 for silver and Algeria&rsquo;s Djamel Sedjati was third in 1:41.50.&nbsp;
With the gold medal, Wanyonyi &ndash; who emerged from Friday&rsquo;s semifinals with the fastest qualifying time &ndash; kept alive a remarkable streak of five consecutive gold medals for Kenya in the men&rsquo;s 800m. The streak began in 2008, and in London, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo, multiple Kenyan men claimed a medal.

Wanyonyi broke the stagger and ran for the front within 200 metres on his way to a 50.3-second opening lap until France&rsquo;s Gabriel Tual took the lead at 500 metres. Entering the final curve, Wanyonyi took back the lead and began to pull away until Arop matched him stride for stride in the final straight. Their duel was a sequel to last year&rsquo;s World Championships in Budapest, when Arop claimed gold. But this time, Wanyonyi had enough.
&ldquo;Arop beat me last year because of experience,&rdquo; Wanyonyi said. &ldquo;He came from the back, then he beat me the last 20 metres. So, this time, nobody can beat me times two.&rdquo;&nbsp;
Arop said: &ldquo;In that moment, you just try to focus on your cues, you try to stay technical, try not to fall apart, and I did everything I could. It's not the first time we've had a finish like that, Wanyonyi and I. He's an incredible athlete. And you know, it's not going to be the last time we have a race like that. Hopefully next time we race, it'll be me on top, but I&rsquo;ve got to give him credit where credit is due.&rdquo;
The race was the first time in which four men have broken 1:42 and seven men have broken 1:43.
Bryce Hoppel became the first US athlete to ever run under 1:42 by finishing fourth in 1:41.67.
Anticipation for a potential world record followed the finalists to the starting line because during the previous month, Sedjati (1:41.46), Wanyonyi (1:41.58), Tual (1:41.61) and Spain&rsquo;s Mohamed Attaoui (1:42.04) produced four of the nine fastest performances of all time in Monaco.&nbsp;
&ldquo;I know these guys have been running 1:41 all year,&rdquo; said Arop. &ldquo;So I just imagined, if I keep myself in it, and finish strong, it's gonna be incredibly fast.&rdquo;

Tamirat Tola, called into the Ethiopian team as a late replacement, won the men&rsquo;s marathon title in an Olympic record of 2:06:26 in brutal heat and humidity over a course of hugely demanding hills, with Belgium&rsquo;s Bashir Abdi earning silver in 2:06:47.
Kenya&rsquo;s Benson Kipruto, fastest in the world this year after winning the Tokyo marathon in 2:02:16, marked his Olympic debut with bronze in 2:07:00 on a day when his 39-year-old compatriot Eliud Kipchoge, seeking a third consecutive title, failed to finish.
Britain&rsquo;s Emile Cairess, making his Olympic debut, finished in fourth place, clocking 2:07:29 after moving past Ethiopia&rsquo;s Deresa Geleta in the finishing stages, with the latter recording 2:07:31 and finishing a second ahead of Japan&rsquo;s Akira Akasaki, who set a personal best.
In the circumstances it was scarcely creditable that Tola bettered the Olympic mark of 2:06:32 set at the Beijing 2008 Games by the late Kenyan runner Sammy Wanjiru.
Huge crowds lined the route in the closing stages, and the spectacle concluded amid packed grandstands in front of Les Invalides, its gilded dome glinting in the morning sunshine.
On a day like this, on a course like this, there was something fitting about the race finishing alongside the building constructed in the 17th century as a haven for disabled soldiers. Everyone completing the course today was a warrior.
Tola, the 2022 world champion, thus joins the fabled list of fellow Ethiopians who have won this prized race &ndash; Abebe Bikila in 1960 and 1964, Mamo Wolde in 1968 and Gezahegne Abera in 2000 &ndash; and added gold to the Olympic 10,000m bronze he won in 2016.
For an Ethiopian team that has not enjoyed its customary success on the track, this was a day of days &ndash; and they will have hopes of further success when the athletics programme concludes with the women&rsquo;s marathon tomorrow.
&ldquo;I am happy today because I fulfilled my goal,&rdquo; said Tola, Ethiopia&rsquo;s first gold medallist of these Games. &ldquo;I prepared well. I trained hard so I could win. In my life, this is my great achievement.
&ldquo;I was the reserve in the Ethiopian team, but when Sisay (Lemma) had injuries, then I had a chance to represent him. I was fully prepared and knew I could fulfil my dream. I am happy to do that today.
&ldquo;This is the Olympics and it is not easy to win the Olympic Games, not at all. I am very proud, very happy.&rdquo;
Abdi, who has recently recovered from a stress fracture of the hip, commented: "The course was very tough today. I tried not to lose a lot of energy. I tried to run as smartly as possible, so I am very, very happy with this result.
"The weather was hot, (the terrain featured) a lot of ups and downs," added the Belgian, who took Olympic marathon bronze in Tokyo three years ago. "Actually, I expected going uphill would be most challenging, but I found going downhill most difficult.
&ldquo;It was very steep and you don&rsquo;t have control of your body. That was very scary, especially after 29km, we had almost 2km of running downhill and it was just going more down and down, and I was really afraid of falling.
"This is the hardest marathon course I&rsquo;ve ever run."
Asked about his return from injury, he added: "It was really a long journey. At the beginning of the year I got a stress fracture, which meant I couldn&rsquo;t run any races. I came here without any preparation and didn&rsquo;t know what to expect.
"I told myself before I started, 'OK, you don&rsquo;t have any race rhythm, but you are fresh, it is your first race of the season, you will be the only guy who is fresh&rsquo;. That&rsquo;s what I was repeating to myself during the race."
Kipruto commented: &ldquo;The course was tough but I&rsquo;m happy with the result I posted. I trained with the mind first before going to the legs and the heart. Running uphill and downhill was not easy.
&ldquo;This was the hardest marathon I have run, and a different experience because it was my first Olympic Games."
"I saw Tola pushing but I said, 'no, it&rsquo;s too early', so I tried to close the gap slowly."
Always in touch with the lead, Tola first took control of the race just after the 20km mark as the field came to the brow of the first long climb, overtaking Italy&rsquo;s Eyob Faniel, who had pushed ahead by 23 seconds at the 15km mark before the start of the grinding uphill stretch.
The pack, led by Akasaki, Geleta and South Africa&rsquo;s Elroy Gelant, caught up with him by the 25km mark, which was passed in 1:16:08, but Tola made his decisive move in the hardest part of the course &ndash; a brutal, extended climb from 27.5km to 29km involving a 16 per cent incline.
The pack soon became a straggling line as each runner worked out the best way of coping with a challenge so severe that some coaches here had been wondering whether it might be best for their charges to walk this stretch.

Once he got to the brow of the hill, he made the most of it, accelerating away from his labouring rivals and establishing an 11-second lead as he went through 30km in 1:32:12.
Such were the ups and downs of the route that it almost resembled a roller-coaster &ndash; but one which guaranteed no one involved had any fun at the fair.
The crucial question at this point was: could Tola, alone, resist the pack that was gradually re-gathering behind him? The answer became gradually and gloriously clear. Tola was never headed thereafter.
At 35km his lead was 18 seconds, at 40km it was 22 seconds. No one was going to stop him.
It was a tribute to Tola&rsquo;s dedication that he should have been so patently ready to take on this monster of a marathon course at such short notice following the injury to Lemma, who won this year&rsquo;s Boston Marathon in 2:06:17, having moved to fourth on the world all-time list with his 2:01:48 victory in Valencia last year.
They were huge super-shoes to fill &ndash; but Tola did so magnificently.
For Kipchoge it was clear well before the halfway point that he was not going to be challenging for a third consecutive title as he began dropping back, his hand going to his left hip as his face registered discomfort and pain. He dropped out shortly after falling back to 71st position at 30km.
Meanwhile his long-time rival Kenenisa Bekele, returning aged 42 to the Olympic arena where he won three golds and a silver on the track, finished 39th in 2:12:24.
"Around 15km my hamstring felt stretched, so I could not do any more after that,&rdquo; Bekele said. &ldquo;Even after 10km I was feeling the strain, so I knew I could not catch up with the leaders."
"It is fantastic that Ethiopia won the race. Tola is very strong, and I am happy for him."
"People have been talking about me and Kipchoge, but you see it was the young generation today. These guys are stronger than us.&rdquo;
At 42, Mongolia&rsquo;s Ser-Od Bat-Ochir, who finished 71st and last, became the first athlete to run six Olympic marathons, something he has done consecutively since his first at the Athens 2004 Games.

Ethiopia’s late sub Tola wins marathon in Olympic record in brutal conditions over hugely challenging course

An Olympic 400m record of 48.17 by Marileidy Paulino of the Dominican Republic proved one of the major highlights on a captivating night of athletics at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games on Friday (9 August).
It was an evening of both individual brilliance and riveting head-to-head duels as Rai Benjamin finally got the win he&rsquo;d been seeking on the big stage over arch rival Karsten Warholm of Norway, the US star powering to 400m hurdles gold in 46.46, while in the heptathlon Belgium&rsquo;s Nafi Thiam had to summon all her strength in the 800m to repel a superb effort by world champion Katarina Johnson-Thompson, Thiam winning her third straight Olympic title with a tally of 6880.
The men&rsquo;s triple jump produced a thrilling duel with Spain&rsquo;s Jordan Alejandro Diaz Fortun leaping 17.86m to deny Pedro Pichardo by just two centimetres. Canada sprang a surprise in the men&rsquo;s 4x100m, USA lived up to their favourite&rsquo;s tag in the women&rsquo;s 4x100m, while in the women&rsquo;s 10,000m Kenya&rsquo;s Beatrice Chebet completed a golden double. There was also gold for Germany in the women&rsquo;s shot put through Yemisi Ogunleye.
But let&rsquo;s start with Paulino, who put on a one-lap exhibition in the <a href="https://worldathletics.org/competitions/olympic-games/paris24/news/article/paris-2024-olympics-report-women-400m" target="_blank" rel="noopener">women&rsquo;s 400m final</a>, powering to gold in 48.17 to break Marie-Jose Perec's Olympic record of 48.25 from the 1996 Games in Atlanta. She ripped through the first 200m and simply never looked likely to relinquish gold thereafter, hitting the line well clear of Bahrain&rsquo;s Salwa Eid Naser (48.53) and Poland&rsquo;s Natalia Kaczmarek (48.98), becoming the first woman from the Dominican Republic to win an Olympic gold in any sport.
&ldquo;It's the only medal that I was missing to complete the Olympic cycle,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;I still cannot believe that just happened.&rdquo;
The <a href="https://worldathletics.org/competitions/olympic-games/paris24/news/article/paris-2024-olympics-report-men-400m-hurdles" target="_blank" rel="noopener">men&rsquo;s 400m hurdles</a> proved the race of the Games in Tokyo three years ago and there were high hopes for a similar spectacle here as Rai Benjamin and Karsten Warholm ran it back along with Brazil&rsquo;s Alison Dos Santos, the 2022 world champion. But in truth, the duel only lasted until the home turn, at which point Benjamin began to assert and Warholm started to fade, the US athlete finally getting the gold his ability long seemed destined to win, clocking 46.46 ahead of Warholm (47.06) and Dos Santos (47.26).

&ldquo;I finally got it done,&rdquo; said Benjamin. &ldquo;In a way, the weight has been lifted. This colour of the medal has eluded me for so long and to get it done in this fashion, in front of my friends and family just means so much to me.&rdquo;
The <a href="https://worldathletics.org/competitions/olympic-games/paris24/news/article/paris-2024-olympics-report-women-heptathlon" target="_blank" rel="noopener">heptathlon</a> proved a close-fought contest, with Thiam and Johnson-Thompson both throwing season&rsquo;s bests in the penultimate javelin, leaving Thiam with a 121-point lead ahead of the 800m, which translates to about 8.3 seconds.
Johnson-Thompson went out hard, passing 400m in 60 seconds and she carved almost a second off her PB with 2:04.90 to threaten to take gold, but further down the track Thiam was also producing the best 800m of her life, clocking a PB of 2:10.62 to successfully defend her title with a tally of 6880 points &ndash; the highest of all of her Olympic title-winning scores. Johnson-Thompson claimed silver and her first Olympic medal with 6844 while Noor Vidts made it two Belgians on the podium, taking bronze with 6707.
&ldquo;I feel very special,&rdquo; said Thiam. &ldquo;I didn&rsquo;t cross that line and think I made history. I simply thought about all this pain, hard work, sacrifice, all those moments where I felt lonely, all of that paid off and I&rsquo;m really grateful.&rdquo;

In the <a href="https://worldathletics.org/competitions/olympic-games/paris24/news/article/paris-2024-olympics-report-women-shot-put" target="_blank" rel="noopener">women&rsquo;s shot put</a>, Yemisi Ogunleye found a breakthrough at the perfect time, unleashing the longest outdoor throw of her career in the final round to take gold with 20.00m ahead of New Zealand&rsquo;s Maddison-Lee Wesche, who threw a PB of 19.86m for silver. China&rsquo;s Song Jiayuan claimed bronze with 19.32m.
The <a href="https://worldathletics.org/competitions/olympic-games/paris24/news/article/paris-2024-olympics-report-men-triple-jump" target="_blank" rel="noopener">men&rsquo;s triple jump</a> saw Jordan Alejandro Diaz Fortun become the first Spanish man to win a senior global title in the discipline, leaping 17.86m to deny defending Olympic champion Pedro Pichardo of Portugal (17.84m). Italy's Andy Diaz took bronze with 17.64m.

The <a href="https://worldathletics.org/competitions/olympic-games/paris24/news/article/paris-2024-olympics-report-women-10000m" target="_blank" rel="noopener">women&rsquo;s 10,000m</a> was a cagey race, one where speed proved a precious commodity at the end. It was once again Kenya&rsquo;s Beatrice Chebet who had the most of it, outkicking Italy&rsquo;s Nadia Battocletti to win gold in 30:43.25 and complete a distance double. Battocletti earned silver in a national record of 30:43.35 as Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands clocked 30:44.12 for bronze.
In the <a href="https://worldathletics.org/competitions/olympic-games/paris24/news/article/paris-2024-olympics-report-women-4x100m" target="_blank" rel="noopener">women&rsquo;s 4x100m</a>, Great Britain and Northern Ireland were left to rue their changeovers as they had to settle for silver in 41.85 as the US quartet of Melissa Jefferson, Twanisha Terry, Gabby Thomas and Sha&rsquo;Carri Richardson swept to gold in 41.78, with Germany taking bronze with 41.97.
The <a href="https://worldathletics.org/competitions/olympic-games/paris24/news/article/paris-2024-olympics-report-men-4x100m" target="_blank" rel="noopener">men&rsquo;s 4x100m</a> saw the US quartet cross the line seventh after a botched first exchange between Christian Coleman and Kenny Bednarek, but they were then disqualified. It was the Canadian quartet of Aaron Brown, Jerome Blake, Brendon Rodney and Andre de Grasse who swept to gold in 37.50, with Akani Simbine finally getting his Olympic medal when anchoring South Africa to silver in an African record of 37.57, with Great Britain and Northern Ireland third in 37.61.

Paulino and Benjamin dazzle over one lap to win Olympic golds in Paris

Rai Benjamin is no stranger to a major championships podium; the US 400m hurdler has earned medals at the past four global championships. But on Friday (9) at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Benjamin finally landed a long-awaited gold by winning the men&rsquo;s 400m hurdles.
The 27-year-old equalled his own world-leading mark of 46.46 to get the better of arch rival and defending champion Karsten Warholm, who was second in 47.06, reversing their positions from the Tokyo Olympics three years ago. Alison dos Santos, the 2022 world champion, took bronze for the second successive Games, clocking 47.26 in a race where the first six men finished inside 48 seconds.
Benjamin went into the race as the slight favourite, having won all of his races this year including a world-leading 46.46 win at the US Olympic Trials and a 46.67 win over Warholm and Dos Santos at the Wanda Diamond League meeting in Monaco last month.

He had also looked remarkably easy through the rounds, winning his heat in 48.82 and his semifinal in 47.85. Warholm, meanwhile, had been pushed in both rounds by French breakthrough performer Clement Ducos, while Dos Santos only made it through to the final as a time qualifier.
But Benjamin knew better than to underestimate the two men who sit immediately above and below him on the world all-time list.
Benjamin, drawn in lane eight with Warholm one lane inside him, got off to a strong start as his Norwegian rival matched him barrier for barrier throughout the first half. On the top bend, Benjamin started to forge a lead. By the time they entered the home straight, Benjamin was noticeably ahead and continuing to pull away.
After successfully negotiating the final barrier, Benjamin charged through the line in 46.46. Warholm held on for silver, holding off a fast-finishing Dos Santos in lane three, who finished third in 47.26. Ducos was fourth in 47.76, just 0.03 ahead of Kyron McMaster of the British Virgin Islands.
&ldquo;It feels great, to be honest,&rdquo; said Benjamin after producing the tenth sub-47-second clocking of his career. &ldquo;I got the s*** done, man. I finally got it done. This colour of the medal has eluded me for so long, and to get it done in this fashion, in front of my friends and family just means so much to me. In a way, the weight has been lifted.
"I don't think I ever doubted it, it was more about staying patient and keep showing up every day,&rdquo; he added. &ldquo;I told myself, &lsquo;it has to go my way at some point&rsquo;. It went my way today and that's all I can ask for.
&ldquo;I know my last 200 is lethal and I know that I can outrun anyone at that point in the race. I just relied on that, trusted what I've done all season. That was the game changer for me today. He (Warholm) wanted to win, everyone in that field wanted to win. It wasn't going to be given to anyone, I had to come out and take it.&rdquo;
Warholm was gracious in defeat. &ldquo;Rai did a great job,&rdquo; said the world champion. &ldquo;Whoever takes it is the better man on the day. In my head, I deserved it as well, but this is not charity. Everybody is doing what they can to be a better man, and today it was him. I have to smile a little bit about the silver medal. The level is super high.&rdquo;

Fifth time's the charm as Benjamin takes Olympic 400m hurdles gold in Paris

Jordan Alejandro Diaz Fortun claimed gold in the men's triple jump at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games on Friday (9), becoming the first Spanish man to win a senior global title in the discipline.
Just like his battle with defending Olympic champion Pedro Pichardo at the European Championships two months ago, Diaz Fortun won by a narrow margin, leaping 17.86m to the Portuguese athlete's 17.84m.
Italy's Andy Diaz Hernandez took bronze with 17.64m, just three centimetres ahead of Jamaican teenager Jaydon Hibbert, on the comeback after injury.
The European Championships in Rome was just the second competition in history in which two men surpassed 18 metres, as Diaz Fortun soared to third on the world all-time list with 18.18m to beat Pichardo with 18.04m. While the distances were not quite as far in Paris, the contest was no less thrilling, with just two centimetres separating the top two and three centimetres between third and fourth.

Competing on a wet track following the earlier rain, world U20 champion Hibbert had opened with 17.31m and Diaz with 17.63m. Pichardo and Diaz Fortun both made a statement from the off, respectively leaping 17.79 and 17.86m.&nbsp;
That opener remained Diaz Fortun&rsquo;s best and although Pichardo got very close with 17.84m in the second round, the Spanish athlete narrowly held on to victory. He backed up his winning leap with marks of 17.64m, 17.85m, 17.84m and 17.25m.
After a foul in round three, 17.52m in round four and a pass in round five, it looked like Pichardo might have saved his best for last but at 17.81m it was just a few centimetres off Diaz Fortun&rsquo;s lead.
Diaz Hernandez ended his own competition on a high as he improved with his final attempt &ndash; his 17.64m being a centimetre farther than he managed in the first round, which cemented his bronze medal position ahead of Hibbert, who jumped 17.61m in round two.
Burkina Faso&rsquo;s world indoor and outdoor champion Hugues Fabrice Zango finished fifth with 17.50m &ndash; the best ever mark for fifth place in any competition.
Salif Mane's 17.41m for sixth place, the 17.38m Max Hess jumped for seventh and the 17.34m by Lazaro Martinez for eighth were all also best marks-for-place.
&ldquo;To be an Olympic champion is the biggest achievement I have, it has been my dream since I was a kid,&rdquo; said Diaz Fortun. &ldquo;I even have something on Facebook from 2017, when I won the World U18 Championships, and I wrote down that I wanted to be an Olympic champion.
"I did it. I'm super happy with today's results. It was a really good score and I have the gold medal.&rdquo;

Diaz Fortun wins Spain's first senior global triple jump title with Olympic gold in Paris

Kenya&rsquo;s Olympic 5000m champion Beatrice Chebet accomplished her double golden glory by winning the 10,000m at the Paris 2024 Games on Friday (9).
Just four days after striking gold in the 5000m final, Olympic debutant Chebet emerged victorious in the women&rsquo;s 10,000m in 30:43.25 at the Stade de France.
Italy&rsquo;s Nadia Battocletti, who was fourth in the 5000m, finished strong in a national record of 30:43.35 to secure the silver as Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands ran 30:44.12 for bronze &ndash; her second medal of that colour in Paris after her third-place finish in the 5000m.&nbsp;
The feat makes Chebet the first Kenyan woman to win Olympic 10,000m gold and only the third woman after Tirunesh Dibaba and Hassan to win the 5000m and 10,000m double at the Olympic Games.
The 24-year-old also became the first to win 5000m and 10,000m Olympic titles in addition to the world cross country title and the 10,000m world record.&nbsp;
Chebet, who shattered the world 10,000m record in May&rsquo;s Prefontaine Classic, was no doubt the centre of focus in the final. She did the sign of a cross before taking off as part of a field that featured defending champion Hassan, 5000m world record-holder Gudaf Tsegay and Battocletti.

The rain had stopped and the sun was shining bright when the women took off in the 10,000m on a somewhat wet track.
Rahel Daniel of Eritrea had an early leading role with Battocletti behind her, taking the field through 1000m in 3:12. The main cast included Chebet and Tsegay tucked in the middle of the pack, while Hassan stayed behind.
The race was tactical and Daniel was in the lead until she dropped out of the competition and Rino Goshima of Japan took over, leading the pack through 3000m in 9:26.94 and 4000m in 12:38.12. Chebet had moved up to third position, and throughout the whole race she had no interest in going in front.&nbsp;
Thirteen athletes were still bunched together with eight laps remaining. This time it was Ethiopian Tsigie Gebreselama&rsquo;s turn to lead, taking them through 7000m in 21:15.65. The pack had Chebet, Margaret Kipkemboi, Lilian Kasait Rengeruk, Fotyen Tesfay, Tsegay, Sarah Chelangat and Battocletti.&nbsp;
With two laps to go, Kenya&rsquo;s Kipkemboi pushed the pace and just before the bell it was an East Africa contest. Kipkemboi stepped on the gas again after the bell, with Rengeruk on her shoulder. Their intention &ndash; to drop the rest, a move that made Chebet and Battocletti immediately respond. Hassan also covered the move.
With 200 metres to go, Chebet &ndash; who had run a very tactical race &ndash; overtook Kipkemboi, with Battocletti hot on her heels. But Chebet&rsquo;s strong kick was enough to earn the 10,000m gold medal in 30:43.25, the slowest winning time since the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games.
Battocletti crossed the line a tenth of a second after Chebet, taking home a silver medal and a national record of 30:43.35.&nbsp;
Hassan's triple quest in Paris amounted to a second podium finish, as she came home third in 30:44.12. She will next compete in the marathon on Sunday.&nbsp;
&ldquo;I&rsquo;m so happy," said Chebet. "To do the 5000m and 10,000m is not something easy. But just focus, and know that you can achieve. Just believe in yourself.
"I believed that I could do it. I just wanted to win the 10,000m for my country. My country has never won a gold medal (in the women&rsquo;s 10,000m). So I said I wanted to be the first."

Kenya’s Olympic 5000m champion Beatrice Chebet accomplished her double golden glory by winning the 10,000m at the Paris 2024 Games on Friday

Chebet strikes a second gold and Kenya's first Olympic women's 10,000m title in Paris

The world indoor silver medallist became Olympic champion at the Paris 2024 Games on Friday (9) as Yemisi Ogunleye achieved the outdoor throw of her life to take the title in the final round.
The German 25-year-old launched a 20.00m put on her last attempt to prevail in a battle with New Zealand&rsquo;s Maddison-Lee Wesche, who threw a PB of her own &ndash; 19.86m &ndash; and secured silver.
China&rsquo;s Song Jiayuan claimed bronze by four centimetres ahead of USA&rsquo;s Jaida Ross &ndash; 19.32m to 19.28m.
Ogunleye overcame an early slip to triumph, with the wet conditions at the start of the session proving a challenge. As Ogunleye released her shot in the first round, she slid and went down on her knee.
It didn&rsquo;t seem to faze her, though, as she returned to the circle and managed 19.55m on her second attempt &ndash; two centimetres farther than she had ever previously thrown outdoors.
That followed a first valid mark of 19.58m for Wesche, who opened with a foul and then took the lead with her second attempt.
The contest for the title would remain between those two athletes.&nbsp;
Wesche, the 2018 world U20 champion and 2022 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist, backed up her 19.58m with 18.54m in the third round and 19.10m in the fourth.
Ogunleye, who fouled her third attempt, threw 18.75m in the fourth round before she launched herself into the lead with 19.73m in the fifth &ndash; 15cm farther than Wesche&rsquo;s best throw at that point.
But Wesche wasn&rsquo;t giving up without a fight. She was next in the circle and responded with 19.86m &ndash; adding five centimetres to the PB she set last month during a competition in Schonebeck, where she beat Ogunleye.
Wesche had regained the lead with one round to go.

So Ogunleye returned to the circle with a medal secured but with an eye on upgrading her silver position to gold.
She released the shot and it flew out to exactly 20 metres, just 19cm off the outright PB she set to secure silver behind Canada&rsquo;s Sarah Mitton at the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow in March.
As the implement hit the 20-metre tape, Ogunleye put her hands to her mouth and then fell to her knees when the distance was confirmed.
Wesche smiled and knew what she needed to do. But as her final throw was measured at 19.68m &ndash; her fourth 19 metre-plus throw of the contest &ndash; it wasn&rsquo;t quite enough.
&ldquo;My goal coming here was 20 metres,&rdquo; said Ogunleye. &ldquo;That was the distance that I threw just once in Glasgow. I knew I was capable of throwing such distances. In Olympic competitions, it is necessary to bring all the best you have because you only have this chance once.&rdquo;
Reflecting on the moments after her final throw, she added: &ldquo;I was just saying a prayer. It was the moment when I knew that if I have the faith, I am capable of doing more than I can think or ask for. In that moment, I just took all the energy that had left and just put it out there.&rdquo;
Asked about the close competition, Wesche replied: &ldquo;I&rsquo;d like to think I thrive in those situations and Yemi came out on top. Just the better athlete on the day, but I&rsquo;m happy with what I got.&rdquo;
Song had moved herself into bronze medal position with 19.32m in the fourth round &ndash; a mark that put her just four centimetres ahead of NCAA champion Ross, whose best of 19.28m came from her opening attempt.&nbsp;
Song's decision to stay in the sport had paid off.&nbsp;
&ldquo;I feel quite emotional now,&rdquo; said the Tokyo Olympic fifth-place finisher. &ldquo;This was unexpected. I guess I was a little lucky today. After it rained, I adjusted myself. With my technique, I couldn&rsquo;t help but feel a little afraid of throwing in the rain. I just took it one shot at a time.
&ldquo;Bronze is something I can be happy about with this season. I went through some lows in 2022 and 2023. In 2023, I basically never crossed the 19-metre mark. I doubted myself a lot, but I also felt I had it in me. At that time, I didn&rsquo;t know what to do, but I also knew it would be silly to give it all up. I just thought: 'There&rsquo;s one more season to Paris 2024, so just go for it.'&rdquo;
In a close contest, Song&rsquo;s compatriot Gong Lijiao &ndash; the defending champion and two-time world gold medallist &ndash; finished fifth with 19.27m.
World leader Mitton, who threw a national record of 20.68m in May, was unable to challenge for another title to go with her world indoor gold as her best of 17.48m in the first three rounds was not enough to put her in the top eight and enable her to continue her campaign. The competition of USA&rsquo;s Raven Saunders, who claimed silver in Tokyo, also came to an end at that stage.

Ogunleye gets shot put gold with her final throw in Paris

Belgium&rsquo;s Nafissatou Thiam successfully defended her heptathlon title at the Paris 2024 Games, becoming the first combined events athlete in history to win three Olympic gold medals.
She didn&rsquo;t have it easy, though, and was put under pressure from world champion Katarina Johnson-Thompson from the outset, eventually winning by just 36 points: 6880 to 6844.
The only time Thiam has had a smaller winning margin was when she earned the first of her 11 major continental titles, the 2016 Olympic gold, which she took by 35 points from Jessica Ennis-Hill.
Two-time world indoor champion Noor Vidts earned her first major outdoor medal, taking bronze with a PB of 6707. For the first time ever, five women bettered 6600 as Annik Kalin finished fourth in a Swiss record of 6639 and USA&rsquo;s Anna Hall placed fifth with 6615.
Kalin took an early lead, clocking a PB of 12.87 in the 110m hurdles. Vidts also started with a PB, running 13.10, while Johnson-Thompson ran a season&rsquo;s best of 13.40. Thiam, meanwhile, started with 13.56.
Johnson-Thompson matched Thiam in the high jump, both women clearing 1.92m as the Briton moved into the overall lead. Hall cleared 1.89m to put herself in medal contention, while Vidts got over 1.83m.
Thiam set an outdoor PB of 15.54m in the shot put to take the overall lead, but Johnson-Thompson continued to apply pressure by adding half a metre to her PB with 14.44m, putting her within 50 points of the Belgian.
Johnson-Thompson&rsquo;s 23.44 clocking in the 200m &ndash; the fastest of the day &ndash; put the two-time world champion into the overall lead at the end of the first day, 48 points ahead of Thiam, who clocked 24.46 in the 200m.
Hall ended the day in third overall, five points ahead of Vidts, both women dipping inside 24 seconds in the 200m.
Thiam and Johnson-Thompson produced almost identical marks in the first discipline of day two, leaping 6.41m and 6.40m respectively in the long jump. Colombia&rsquo;s Martha Araujo was the top performer in that discipline, sailing out to a PB of 6.61m. Kalin jumped a solid 6.59m, though it was some way down on the 6.84m PB she set at the European Championships. Vidts, meanwhile, matched Johnson-Thompson&rsquo;s jump of 6.40m.
The two gold medal contenders produced season&rsquo;s bests in the javelin, Johnson-Thompson throwing 45.49m to Thiam&rsquo;s 54.04m, the best of the day. The differential in distance once again gave the Belgian the overall advantage, meaning she went into the final event with a 121-point lead, which translates to about 8.3 seconds in 800m terms.
The difference in their PBs, meanwhile, was six seconds.
The battle for bronze was even closer with Vidts, Kalin and Hall all in contention.

Hall, one of the fastest 800m runners in heptathlon history, took out the pace as expected, covering the first lap in 58.8 while Johnson-Thompson followed in 1:00.2, a second ahead of Thiam. Hall held on to cross the line in 2:04.39 while Johnson-Thompson took almost a second off her PB with 2:04.90. But Thiam had also produced the race of her life, clocking a PB of 2:10.62 to hold on to pole position.
It gave Thiam a winning score of 6880 &ndash; the highest of all of her Olympic title-winning scores. Johnson-Thompson claimed silver, her first Olympic medal, with 6844 &ndash; the second-best score of her career behind the 6981 British record she set to win the 2019 world title.
Vidts made it two Belgians on the podium, taking bronze with 6707, 68 points ahead of Kalin.
Sofie Dokter of the Netherlands set a PB of 6452 to finish sixth, then there was a three-way tie for seventh place between Araujo, Hungary&rsquo;s Xenia Krizsan and Emma Oosterwegel of the Netherlands, all scoring 6386.
&ldquo;I feel very special,&rdquo; said Thiam. &ldquo;I didn&rsquo;t cross that line and think that I made history. I simply thought about all this pain, hard work, sacrifice, all those moments where I felt lonely, all of that paid off and I&rsquo;m really grateful for that.
&ldquo;In sports you give everything you have in every moment. You have to take whatever the sport gives you, and it can be nothing. But today it&rsquo;s a lot, and I&rsquo;m grateful for that.&rdquo;
After two days of battling for gold, Johnson-Thompson was relieved to end the competition with her first Olympic medal.
&ldquo;My team has helped me become a proper heptathlete,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;I&rsquo;m not just a high jumper and a long jumper; I&rsquo;m now a full heptathlete, and I can continue to get PBs.
&ldquo;Now I just want to relax and breathe, and watch the athletics. I&rsquo;m a huge athletics fan and I haven&rsquo;t been able to see any of it. I&rsquo;ve found something that I love and that&rsquo;s heptathlon.&rdquo;
