The United States produced an utterly dominant performance to take gold in the women&rsquo;s 4x400m at the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25 on Sunday (21), setting a championship record of 3:16.61 on the rain-soaked track at the Japan National Stadium.
Silver went to Jamaica with 3:19.25, while the Netherlands took bronze with 3:20.18.
Such was the dominance of the US display, all four of their team members recorded the quickest splits on their respective legs, with Isabella Whittaker leading them off in 50.12, handing over to Lynna Irby-Jackson, who extended their advantage to more than 10 metres by halfway after a blazing 48.71-second leg.
Aaliyah Butler built that lead more with a 49.96-second leg and when she handed over to Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, the individual 400m champion was able to enjoy a virtual lap of honour on her anchor leg, though she did much more than that, clocking a blazing 47.82 split to carry them to victory in fine style.
Their time took one tenth of a second off the championship record the US had run at the 1993 edition in Stuttgart and is the fifth quickest time in history for the women&rsquo;s 4x400m. Since winning gold in the event for the first time in 1993, the US has now won 11 of the past 17 titles.
It offered a sense of redemption after they faced disqualification in Budapest two years ago for passing the baton outside the takeover zone, and added to their Olympic title in Paris last year.
&ldquo;When you have great teammates as I have, it's amazing,&rdquo; said McLaughlin-Levrone. &ldquo;My last lap felt like a victory lap for us. I just wanted to finish strong because you never know who is behind, chasing you. It was just an incredible race.&rdquo;
Irby-Jackson was also pleased with gold and her 48.71-second leg: &ldquo;I had a great split. I wasn't sure how fast I was running but I knew I was ready to run fast. To just be able to bring the gold medal home, being the part of the legacy of the USA's women's 4x400m relay is incredible.&rdquo;
Jamaica turned in a hugely impressive showing in second, with their opening trio of Dejanea Oakley, Stacey Ann Williams and Andrenette Knight building a 10-metre lead over the Netherlands in the race for silver, and anchor runner Nickisha Pryce made no mistake from there, producing a brilliant final leg of 48.50 to keep the Dutch at bay.
&ldquo;We completed an amazing race,&rdquo; said Williams. &ldquo;It was not easy to come out on the final knowing that USA and the Netherlands have Sydney and Femke on their last legs. But we came up with silver because we trusted each other on every single leg.&rdquo;
The Netherlands surrendered their world title but their quartet of Eveline Saalberg, Lieke Klaver, Lisanne De Witte and Femke Bol seemed delighted with bronze, with Klaver&rsquo;s 49.08 the quickest of their splits just ahead of Bol&rsquo;s 49.10.
&ldquo;We worked hard to be able to do this and we have a great team around us to help us achieve our goals,&rdquo; said Bol, who leaves Tokyo with a full medal collection, having won 400m hurdles gold, mixed 4x400m silver and women&rsquo;s 4x400m bronze. &ldquo;I'm happy with that,&rdquo; she said.
Belgium came home fourth in 3:22.15, with Poland fifth in 3:22.91 and Norway sixth in a national record of 3:23.71 &ndash; Henriette Jaeger splitting 49.53 on anchor.

USA breaks championship record to regain women’s 4x400m title in Tokyo

Botswana&rsquo;s burning desire to win a global men&rsquo;s 4x400m title could not be quenched either by a torrential downpour or a United States quartet set on maintaining its huge tradition in an event where gold has gone to the Stars and Stripes in nine of the past 10 editions.
When US anchor leg runner Rai Benjamin, the 400m hurdles champion, carried a two-metre lead into the final straight it, seemed as if the USA &ndash; despite what looked like a catastrophic start to this competition in the previous day&rsquo;s heats &ndash; were set for another visit to the top of the podium.
Behind him, South Africa &ndash; winners at the World Athletics Relays &ndash; and Olympic silver medallists Botswana appeared to be contesting silver.
And when Zakithi Nene, added to the team having finished fifth in the individual final, came on strong on the outside, it looked as if South Africa would win that contest and perhaps even put final pressure on Benjamin.
But there was one final twist remaining on a track glistening with rain under the aptly named floodlights as the slight figure of Collen Kebinatshipi somehow floated through the middle of his two challengers, just as he had in winning the individual 400m title, to bring Botswana home to their longed-for gold in 2:57:76.
Benjamin, who had no chance to react to this final surge, edged the United States to silver by two-thousandths of a second as they shared the same given time with South Africa of 2:57:83.
No one would have been happier for the result than Botswana&rsquo;s second-leg runner, Letsile Tebogo, who had helped them take Olympic silver in Paris after winning the individual 200m title but who had seen the other side of fortune in Tokyo after being disqualified for a false start in the 100m final and missing out on a 200m medal by one place, despite clocking 19.65.
Tebogo had put Botswana back level with the United States after making up ground on Jacory Patterson on the second leg with a super-fast split of 44.05.
Bayapo Ndori, the 400m bronze medallist and another of the Paris 2024 silver medallists, kept them in the hunt before handing over to the ethereal talent of Kebinatshipi &ndash; who delivered once again in stupendous fashion.
Tebogo, delighted, was the one to instigate Botswana&rsquo;s celebrations as the four young men in pale blue shirts high-stepped their way deliriously through sloshing puddles with the zest of Gene Kelly in Singin&rsquo; in the Rain.
A United States quartet entirely different from the one that contested the final had finished outside qualification after coming home sixth in their heat. But they were able to progress after beating Kenya in a run-off earlier in the day after it had been decided that they had both been impeded by the Zambian team who were subsequently disqualified.
South Africa&rsquo;s challenge had been kept alive by an inspired third-leg run from their 33-year-old 400m world record-holder Wayde Van Niekerk.
Fourth place went to the consistently talented Belgian team, who clocked 2:59:48 ahead of Qatar in 3:01:64, with Great Britain taking sixth place in 3:03:05.

Botswana claims gold in men's 4x400m in Tokyo

Six days after being disqualified from the semifinals in his specialist event, the Olympic 1500m champion struck gold in the 5000m on the last day of the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 2025.
The US runner produced a devastating kick and crossed the line at full speed and bouncing hair in 12:58.30 to take gold ahead of Belgium's Isaac Kimeli (12:58.78) and 10,000m winner Jimmy Gressier (12:59.33).
His win means the US runner has now qualified for two events at the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship &ndash; the 1500m from his Olympic win and 5000m from his win here. He also becomes just the second US man to win this title after Bernard Lagat, who won in 2007 when the World Championships was last held in Japan.
As the gun went off, Hocker and double Olympic medallist Grant Fisher immediately hit the front, with their teammate Nico Young, Ethiopia&rsquo;s Hagos Gebrhiwet and Biniam Mehary, Australia&rsquo;s Ky Robinson and Kimeli close behind. Hocker only led for the first 500m, then sat in the pack for most of the way.
In a highly entertaining race, the lead changed hands frequently as Young took turns with Fisher in the first half. Gebrhiwet moved up through the field and took a brief turn at the front with Kimeli, Gressier, Hocker, Biniam Mehary and Kenya&rsquo;s Matthew Kipsang lined up behind.
Gebrhiwet led the field through the halfway mark in 6:32.76, then Fisher regained the lead and passed through 3000m in 7:56.22 ahead of Gebrhiwet and Mehary following close behind.
Defending champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen, who hadn&rsquo;t raced outdoors at all before travelling to Tokyo, moved to the front with less than 2000m to go, a move that reshuffled the leading pack with Kipsang and Gebrhiwet going with him.
Mehary hit the front with one lap to go with Kimeli and Bahrain&rsquo;s Birhanu Balew close behind. Gressier moved into third with 200m to go while Hocker was in fifth.
Kimeli entered the home straight with a slight lead over Hocker, but the US runner kicked hard down the home straight to win in 12:58.30. Kimeli claimed silver in a season&rsquo;s best of 12:58.78 while Gressier earned bronze in 12:59.33 to leave Tokyo with two medals.
Ingebrigtsen finished 10th while Gebrhiwet, competing at his 10th global championships on the track, placed 13th.

Hocker turns 1500m disappointment into 5000m glory in Tokyo

The World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25 provided a perfect example of how much a decathlon can change from one discipline to the next.
Canada&rsquo;s 2021 Olympic champion Damian Warner, for example, withdrew just before the competition got under way. Defending champion Pierce LePage pulled out after four events. World leader Sander Skotheim was disqualified after a hurdles mishap. And long-time leader Kyle Garland was finally overtaken after eventual winner Leo Neugebauer unleashed a five-metre PB in the javelin.
Neugebauer&rsquo;s 64.34m throw in the penultimate discipline proved to be the pivotal moment. It meant the German went into the final event with a 15-point advantage over Garland, safe in the knowledge that he was a better 1500m runner than his US opponent.
He did more than enough in the final event to hold on to gold, scoring a season&rsquo;s best of 8804 to finish ahead of Puerto Rico&rsquo;s Ayden Owens-Delerme (8784) and Garland (8703).
Garland had taken the lead after the second discipline, having clocked 10.51 in the 100m and jumped 7.92m in the long jump. Neugebauer was in seventh at that stage, opening with 10.80 in the 100m and 7.62m in the long jump. Simon Ehammer and Skotheim, the two most recent winners of the world indoor title, both jumped 7.97m to move into second and third respectively, ahead of 100m winner Owens-Delerme.
Garland and Neugebauer were the top two performers in the shot put, throwing 17.02m and 16.70m respectively, enough to put them in first and second place overall. A 14.50m throw meant that Skotheim dropped slightly to fifth, but the Norwegian made up ground in the high jump, topping the group with 2.14m to move into second overall.
Garland maintained his lead after the high jump, clearing 2.11m. Neugebauer jumped 1.99m, but Ehammer wasn&rsquo;t so fortunate and failed to register a valid height, marking his exit from the competition.
A 48.73 run in the 400m kept Garland at the top of the leader board at the end of the first day ahead of Skotheim (47.86), Puerto Rico&rsquo;s Owens-Delerme (46.46) and Neugebauer (48.27).
In the 110m hurdles at the start of day two, Garland extended his lead over Neugebauer, clocking 14.30 to 14.80. But Skotheim was disqualified for knocking down a hurdle in an illegal way, taking the pre-event favourite out of the contest.
Neugebauer dominated the discus with a 56.15m throw to reclaim second place behind Garland (48.06m) and ahead of Owens-Delerme (46.12m). The German closed the gap further after clearing 5.10m in the pole vault, a height matched by Owens-Delerme.
Garland's 4.80m vault was enough to keep the US all-rounder in the lead by 53 points, but the javelin turned the contest on its head. Neugebauer added 5.35 metres to his PB with a 64.34m effort, moving him into the lead ahead of Garland, who threw 59.78m. It gave the German a 15-point advantage going into the 1500m.
The German ensured he stayed ahead of Garland in the final discipline to maintain his overall lead, finishing in 4:31.89 to bring his winning tally to 8804. Owens-Delerme produced a 4:17.91 run to elevate him into the silver medal position with a national record of 8784, while Garland claimed bronze with 8703.
Niklas Kaul, the 2019 world champion who unleashed a monster throw of 78.19m in the javelin, finished fourth with 8538. European champion Johannes Erm was fifth with 8431, ahead of US duo Heath Baldwin (8337) and Harrison Williams (8269).

Neugebauer makes late charge to win decathlon in Tokyo

Continuing a run of middle distance and distance upsets in Tokyo, Kenya&rsquo;s Lilian Odira sprang one of the biggest surprises of the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25 to run down Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson in the deepest women&rsquo;s 800m race in history.
Odira, 26, had barely been mentioned in despatches as a potential winner. With a pre-championships personal best of 1:56.52, she finished two seconds behind the British champion when they met at the Wanda Diamond League meeting in Silesia in July.
But she found another gear in Tokyo to win Kenya&rsquo;s seventh gold medal of the World Championships. The dominant Kenyan women have now won every women&rsquo;s event in Tokyo from 800m to marathon. Faith Kipyegon won the 1500m, Beatrice Chebet the 5000m and 10,000m, Faith Cherotich the 3000m steeplechase and Peres Jepchirchir the marathon.
For much of tonight&rsquo;s race, defending world champion Mary Moraa looked the most likely Kenyan winner. She led until 600m, when Hodgkinson made her usual surge. She hit the straight in front, but was challenged 50m from the finish line, first by training partner Georgia Hunter Bell, and then by Odira, who flashed home over the final 20m.
She stopped the clock in a championship record of 1:54.62, closely followed by the British pair of Hunter Bell (1:54.90) and Hodgkinson (1:54.91). In a rarity for athletics, all three have female coaches.
Odira, coached by Jacinta Murigura in Nairobi, set an almost two-second personal best and took down the oldest championship record in the book &ndash; the 42-year-old mark of 1:54.68 set by Czech athlete Jarmila Kratochvilova in 1983.
A late bloomer after giving birth to two sons, Odira has now improved almost four seconds since she was run out in the semi-finals at the Paris Olympics little more than a year ago.
&ldquo;This is my first World Championships and I am really grateful to be leaving it as the world champion,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;It has been a long time coming.&rdquo;
&ldquo;I didn't have any expectations; I was just following the pace of the race. I managed to have the most powerful finish and I got lucky to be going home with a gold medal. This medal means the world to me. It is for my sons, they are four and two. They are my motivation.&rdquo;
This is the first time that three women have broken 1:55 in the same race, and the first time that five have broken 1:56. Fifth-placed Sarah Moraa (1:55.74) and sixth-placed Sage Hurta-Klecker (1:55.89) both set personal bests. In almost any other race, they would have been on the podium.
Hunter Bell, the Olympic bronze medallist in the 1500m in Paris last year, moved down in distance this year following good early season form over 800m, and her decision was rewarded with a step up on the podium.
&ldquo;I am very proud with my performance tonight,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;This is my best time ever.&rdquo;
She paid tribute to Hodgkinson and their coaches, Jenny Meadows and Trevor Painter.
&ldquo;That's how we get to be the fastest in the world. We push each other. You don't want to be alone in training. You need people better than you&hellip; I am so happy it's all come together.&rdquo;
Hodgkinson came to Tokyo determined to break her silver streak after second-place medals at the last two World Championships, but the bronze medal was not what she had in mind.
She broke her run of global silvers with victory at the Paris Olympics last year and arrived here as the favourite despite missing most of the season with a hamstring injury.
However, she returned at the Silesia Diamond League in July in stunning style, winning commandingly in 1:54.74, just a touch outside her personal best. She had raced only twice this year before arriving in Tokyo, just enough to show that she was back in top form.
But three championship rounds in four days appeared to have dulled her finishing speed.
&ldquo;It got away from me once again,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;I went and gave my best. I will go back and see what I could have done differently. I wanted gold so I am a bit disappointed.&rdquo;
But she conceded that she had not had the best preparation for these championships, and at some stages doubted she would make it to the start line.
&ldquo;I think if someone told me back in June, 'You are going to run, get a bronze medal', I would have taken it,&rdquo; she said.
&ldquo;But I came here as a favourite and I wanted to fulfil that. It's part of my journey, I want to get that world gold and will definitely get it at some point. This season, coming back from an injury showed me how strong I am. I think I can take a lot of pride in what I have done.&rdquo;

Beatrice Chebet and Maria Perez both produced a repeat performance of their previous global doubles on day eight of the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25.
Chebet, who won the 10,000m earlier in the championships, added the 5000m title to her collection, replicating her double victory from the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Perez, meanwhile, added the 20km race walk gold to the 35km crown she'd won on the opening day of the championships.
On what proved to be a good day for Kenya, Emmanuel Wanyonyi took the men's 800m title in a championship record in a race of unprecedented depth.
Anna Hall was another pre-event favourite who lived up to her billing, the US all-rounder taking the heptathlon title. There were also victories from Jessica Schilder in the shot put, Juleisy Angulo in the javelin and Caio Bonfim in the 20km race walk.

<h2>Chebet repeats Paris distance double</h2>
Beatrice Chebet beat her teammate and close friend Faith Kipyegon, winner of the 1500m at these championships and the defending champion at this distance, to take 5000m gold and add it to the 10,000m crown from earlier in the championships.
In a relatively slow but tactical race, Kipyegon and Chebet sat on the shoulder of Italy's Nadia Battocletti on the final lap before kicking away in the closing stages.
Chebet crossed the line in 14:54.36 and Kipyegon followed in 14:55.07. Battocletti, the 10,000m runner-up, claimed bronze in 14:55.42, meaning all podium finishers earned their second medal of the championships.

Just as she had done in Budapest, Maria Perez made more history in Tokyo. The Spaniard achieved her second world race walk title double, retaining her 20km crown to go with the 35km gold she claimed on the first day of competition.
The 29-year-old is now a four-time world champion and a two-time Olympic medallist, and she secured her latest title in 1:25:54 &ndash; the second-fastest time of her career.
She was chased over the finish line by Mexico's Alegna Gonzalez in a North American record of 1:26:06. Nanako Fujii delighted the home fans by earning bronze in a Japanese record of 1:26:18 &ndash; her nation's first medal in this event in World Championships history.

<h2>Wanyonyi breaks 800m championship record</h2>
Emmanuel Wanyonyi led a field of record depth to win the 800m title at the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25, setting a championship record of 1:41.86 to add world gold to his Olympic title.
The Kenyan 21-year-old managed to hold off a fierce challenge from Canada&rsquo;s defending champion Marco Arop and a fast-finishing Djamel Sedjati of Algeria. It was Sedjati who stormed through for silver in 1:41.90 and Arop got bronze in 1:41.95.
Cian McPhillips ran a big Irish record of 1:42.15 to finish fourth, ahead of Mohamed Attaoui, Max Burgin, Navasky Anderson and Tshepiso Masalela.
It is the first time that eight men have ever dipped under 1:43 in a single race.

<h2>Hall dominates heptathlon</h2>
World leader Anna Hall became the first US woman to win a world heptathlon title in 32 years, taking gold with 6888.
She led from the second event and continued to extend her lead with almost every discipline. She ran 13.05 in the 100m hurdles, cleared 1.89m in the high jump, threw 15.80m in the shot, ran 23.50 in the 200m, jumped 6.12m in the long jump, threw a PB of 48.13m in the javelin and finished by winning the 800m in 2:06.08.
Kate O'Connor smashed the Irish record to take silver with 6714. Defending champion Katarina Johnson-Thompson shared bronze with USA's Taliyah Brooks, both scoring 6581.

<h2>Schilder wins shot with last-round thriller</h2>
Jessica Schilder of the Netherlands became the first European athlete in a decade to win the women&rsquo;s world shot put title &ndash; and the first ever from her country &ndash; with a last-round effort of 20.29m that tipped the final on its head.
Up until that point, it looked as if victory was destined for New Zealand&rsquo;s Maddison-Lee Wesche, who had led with a first-round throw of 20.06m to equal her personal best.
But Schilder's sixth-round effort ended as the best mark of the day and withstood a late challenge from defending champion Chase Jackson, who threw 20.21m in the final round to claim silver, bumping Wesche into bronze.

<h2>Bonfim turns silver into gold</h2>
A week after claiming silver in the 35km event, Brazil's Caio Bonfim went one better to win gold in the men's 20km race walk.
Japan's world record-holder Toshikazu Yamanishi had led for much of the second half, but he was hit with a two-minute time penalty, taking him out of contention. That allowed Bonfim to take up the lead with a few kilometres to go.
Bonfim, winner of two global silver medals and two bronze, held on to win his first major gold in 1:18:35. China's Wang Zhaozhao took silver in 1:18:43 ahead of Spain's Paul McGrath (1:18:45).

<h2>Angulo delivers shock of the championships</h2>
There have already been many surprise medallists in Tokyo, but Ecuador&rsquo;s Juleisy Angulo produced arguably the biggest shock of the championships so far by winning the women&rsquo;s javelin.
The 24-year-old produced a national record of 65.12m to take victory. She was the only athlete to throw beyond 65 metres, but Latvia&rsquo;s Anete Sietina came close in the final round with a PB of 64.64m to take silver.
Australia&rsquo;s Mackenzie Little earned bronze with her first-round throw of 63.58m.

<h2>Decathlon state of play</h2>
US champion Kyle Garland leads after the first day of the decathlon. He opened with a 10.51 run in the 100m, then a 7.92m leap in the long jump put him into the overall lead. He extended his leading margin after topping the shot put with 17.02m.
World indoor champion Sander Skotheim also got off to a good start. His 10.91 run in the 100m was a little bit down on his best, but he sailed out to 7.97m in the long jump and followed it with 14.50m in the shot put.
The Norwegian closed the gap on Garland in the next two disciplines, jumping 2.14m to Garland's 2.11m in the high jump, then clocking 47.86 to his US rivals 48.73 in the 400m.
Nevertheless, Garland remains in the lead with a day-one score of 4707, just seven points shy of his half-way score from the US Championships, where he scored a PB of 8869. Skotheim's current tally of 4543 is 68 points shy of the pace he set when scoring his world-leading 8909.

<h2>In the rounds&hellip;</h2>
There was no shortage of drama and dropped batons in the heats of the relays.
Botswana topped the men's 4x400m qualifying round with 2:57.68, but USA failed to automatically advance after being impeded by the Zambian team during one of the exchanges. The US and Kenya have an opportunity to re-run tomorrow.
The US had more success in the women's 4x400m, advancing with ease with 3:22.53. Jamaica also impressed, but Great Britain were surprisingly a few places shy of making the cut.
Ghana sped to a national record of 37.79 to lead the qualifiers for the men's 4x100m. Canada and USA also advanced, but Jamaica and Great Britain were not so fortunate. South Africa failed to finish after being impeded by the Italian team, but they too will have an opportunity for a rerun tomorrow.
All the big favourites - USA, Jamaica, Great Britain and Germany - made it through to the women's 4x100m final.
There were few surprises in the qualifying round of the men&rsquo;s discus. Defending champion Daniel Stahl, 2022 world champion Kristjan Ceh and world record-holder Mykolas Alekna will all clash in tomorrow&rsquo;s final.

Day eight round-up: Chebet and Perez complete doubles, Wanyonyi breaks championship record in Tokyo

It only takes one bolt of lightning to win a javelin world title, and it was Juleisy Angulo who found that burst of energy in Tokyo, becoming Ecuador&rsquo;s first ever female world gold medallist at the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25.
Angulo, 24, came to Tokyo as the 14th&nbsp;seed, but leaves as her country&rsquo;s first field event world champion and a national hero. Ecuador had never even won a medal in a field event and Angulo is the first from her country to qualify for a final in the field.
All of Ecuador&rsquo;s past glory has come from the great race walker Jefferson Perez, a triple world champion.
But the women&rsquo;s javelin has been somewhat subdued this year, with a mass of potential medal contenders. The world title was there for the taking and it was the Ecuadoran who seized the moment, producing the best throw of her life in the second round, 65.12m, which defied all challenge over the last four rounds.
&ldquo;My goal here was to reach the final so I am very emotional, in shock. I still can't believe it,&rdquo; she said.
&ldquo;My training partner Flor Denis (Ruiz Hurtado, of Colombia, who finished sixth) won silver two years ago and I thought I could be at that level one day. I dreamed of a world medal since I started athletics. I have faced some adversities, such as two surgeries in my left knee. But I persevered. I never gave up.&rdquo;
Angulo has never competed in a Diamond League competition but she leaves Tokyo as the world champion, and with that crown she also booked her place for the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship taking place in Budapest from 11-13 September 2026.&nbsp;
Australia&rsquo;s Budapest world bronze medallist Mackenzie Little set the early standard with a first round throw of 63.58m, which held until late in the second round when Angulo stunned the usual contenders, summoning an almost two-metre personal best to take the lead.
Latvia&rsquo;s Anete Sietina was the only one able to respond. Fourth in Budapest, she was determined to be on the podium this time. Her fifth-round throw of 63.35m accomplished that mission, and with at least bronze sewn up she unleashed the biggest throw of her life in the final round, 64.64m, to clinch the silver medal. Little held on to the bronze.
This has not been a vintage year for the event &ndash; this is the smallest distance ever to win the title, but that won&rsquo;t matter a jot in Ecuador. Nor does it to any of the medallists.
&ldquo;It's like a dream, but I deserve it,&rdquo; Sietina said. &ldquo;All the work I put in, it's so much and it's hard, so it means everything. Throwing 64.64m is the magic number and my PB. My last one was in 2017, such a long time it feels like the Titanic: 'It's been 84 years.' I've been waiting that long. Since my fourth place in Budapest, I just worked smarter, not harder and I think fourth was a big motivation for this moment. I knew that I was capable of throwing far. It's a magic day in Tokyo.&rdquo;
The second biggest shock of the competition came in the qualification round when Japan&rsquo;s Olympic champion Haruka Kitaguchi failed to qualify for the final &ndash; much to the dismay of her home crowd.
Kitaguchi, who had thrown 64.63m earlier in the season, could muster only 60.38m with her three qualifying throws which left her 14th&nbsp;in the order and out of the 12-woman final.
Serbia&rsquo;s world U20 champion Adriana Vilagos had no such issue, qualifying first with 66.06m, ahead of Little, who found her form in a rush, hitting a season&rsquo;s best of 65.54m.
Either throw would have been good enough to secure the gold in the final, but timing is everything and it was Angulo who found the magic when it counted.
Little, 28, was philosophical about the outcome, particularly after the Paris Olympics where she entered as a medal contender but flopped in the final. She said she had done a huge amount of work to rebuild her self-belief since then, and saw this medal as &ldquo;a bit of redemption from the Olympics and it&rsquo;s more reflective of what I can do&rdquo;.
A medical doctor, who combines full-time work in Sydney with the demands of her elite training schedule, Little does her best to balance both commitments, but admits it compromises her training at times.
She said she did not expect her first throw to hold up for a medal but was &ldquo;thrilled&rdquo; it had.
&ldquo;This is just such a reward for myself for some really hard work, some really lonely work,&rdquo; she said.
An Australian has now won a medal in this event at the past four World Championships &ndash; Little&rsquo;s two bronzes following Kelsey-Lee Barber&rsquo;s gold medals in 2019 and 2022.

Angulo takes surprise javelin title in Tokyo

In what turned out to be a race of record depth, Kenya&rsquo;s Emmanuel Wanyonyi won the men&rsquo;s 800m at the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25 in a championship record of 1:41.86.
With a gun-to-tape strategy &ndash; similar to the one he used last year when winning the Olympic title in Paris, also in a sub-1:42 time &ndash; he managed to hold off a fierce challenge from Canada&rsquo;s defending champion Marco Arop and a fast-finishing Djamel Sedjati of Algeria.
In complete contrast to Wednesday&rsquo;s 1500m final, when many podium contenders did not make it through the rounds, all the main favourites were on the start line for the final of the two-lap race.
The winning trio topped this season&rsquo;s world rankings and shared the podium at last year&rsquo;s Olympics, when Arop placed second and Sedjati third. This time, they reversed roles: Sedjati claiming silver in 1:41.90, while Arop took bronze in 1:41.95.
&ldquo;I didn't take this race for granted,&rdquo; said Wanyonyi after securing Kenya&rsquo;s eighth world title in the men&rsquo;s 800m. &ldquo;I wanted to do everything to secure the gold. Now I need to defend this title. I want to be a double world champion. Maybe I will start to think about the world record too.&rdquo;
In the final, the Kenyan 21-year-old set a fast pace from the start, running the first lap in 49.26 &ndash; two hundredths of a second faster than his compatriot Rudisha did in the Olympic final in London 13 years ago, when he set the world record of 1:40.91. Rudisha watched his successor's triumph live at the Japan National Stadium, in the company of World Athletics President Sebastian Coe, who held the 800m world record from 1979 to 1997.
&ldquo;I met Rudisha yesterday. He told me just to take a rest and focus, and everything is possible,&rdquo; said Wanyonyi. &ldquo;The race was fast and hard. I knew it was going to be like this. I prepared myself mentally for it. I wanted to run a fast race, that's why I went to the lead. I wanted to run my personal best here and I am happy to walk away with the championship record. I knew lactic acid was going to hit me.&rdquo;
His fast pace led to one of the fastest 800m races in history; it was the first time that eight men had finished inside 1:43 in a single race.
Cian McPhillips lowered his Irish record by more than a second to finish fourth in 1:42.15. Spain&rsquo;s Mohamed Attaoui, who challenged for a podium position coming off the last bend, finished fifth in 1:42.21. Great Britain&rsquo;s Max Burgin set a personal best of 1:42.29, while Jamaica&rsquo;s Navasky Anderson produced a national record of 1:42.76 in seventh.
&ldquo;It was a very tactical race,&rdquo; said Sedjati. &ldquo;Everything happened in the way I planned, except the gold medal. But I'm very happy and satisfied with this silver.&rdquo;
After the race, Sedjati delivered a special message to teammate Yasser Triki, who had finished fourth in the triple jump final: &ldquo;Don't cry, believe in yourself, you deserve better than this. I dedicate my medal to you.&rdquo;
Third-placed Arop said he doesn&rsquo;t know if he would have changed anything tactically. &ldquo;I figured by going out fast it would be harder for everyone to kick at the end,&rdquo; said the Canadian. &ldquo;I wanted to stay in the front and stay strong the whole way. Four medals in the last four major global championships is the kind of consistency we strive for.&rdquo;

Wanyonyi runs championship record to win world 800m title in Tokyo

Kenya&rsquo;s Beatrice Chebet completed another golden double at the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25 on Saturday (20), winning the 5000m to repeat the distance feat she achieved at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
One week on from her 10,000m victory at the Japan National Stadium, Chebet beat her teammate and close friend Faith Kipyegon, winner of the 1500m at these championships and the defending champion in the 5000m.
In a relatively slow but tactical race, Kipyegon and Chebet sat on the shoulder of Italy's Nadia Battocletti on the final lap before kicking away in the closing stages. With her trademark lethal finish, Chebet outpaced her compatriot to cross the finish line in 14:54.36 and secure Kenya&rsquo;s fifth gold medal at the championships.&nbsp;
&ldquo;Running with the likes of Faith and Nadia, you just have to believe in yourself,&rdquo; said Chebet. &ldquo;Today was not an easy race. I came here without pressure and I knew I should not stress myself. If you lose or win, you need to believe in yourself and in being able to come back stronger.
&ldquo;It will be amazing bringing home gold and silver to Kenya. Me and Faith have been friends for a long time. We motivate each other and I am really pleased with our performances.&nbsp;
The 25-year-old is now the only third woman after Tirunesh Dibaba in 2005 and Vivian Cheruiyot in 2011 to win both titles at the same World Athletics Championships.
She now holds both Olympic and world 5000m and 10,000m titles, along with the world cross country title, world road 5km title and world records at 5000m, 10,000m and 5km on the road.
Kipyegon settled for silver in 14:55.07, while 10,000m silver medallist Battocletti claimed bronze this time in 14:55.42, meaning that all the podium finishers earned their second medals of the championships.
It was a tactical race from the outset. The leading contenders &ndash; including Chebet, Kipyegon and Ethiopia&rsquo;s Gudaf Tsegay &ndash; tucked themselves within the pack. There was little movement at the front, even as Chebet and Kipyegon took the lead for a couple of laps, with the athletes still tightly grouped.
USA&rsquo;s Shelby Houlihan led at the halfway point and her brief surge still did not stretch the pack, Josette Andrews, Agnes Ngetich and Battocletti remaining unmoved behind her. It was then that Chebet made her move up to sixth place, with Kipyegon, Medina Eisa and Tsegay attempting to make their way to the front.
After 3000m, Houlihan continued to lead, with Andrews, Ngetich, Battocletti and Maureen Koster close behind. Kipyegon sat in ninth.
There was further jostling for positions as the race reached the final couple of laps, Kipyegon moving into fifth place.
Then Battocletti took over the lead from Houlihan, alongside Kipyegon, while Chebet made her way up to join the leaders. Battocletti stretched the lead, but Kipyegon overtook her before the final bend. Not long after, Chebet also passed Battocletti.
Kipyegon had a solo lead for the first time, but Chebet outkicked her in the closing stages to claim her second world title in Tokyo.
She opened her arms in triumph; she had finally nailed the 5000m on her third attempt at the World Championships following her silver and bronze in 2022 and 2023, respectively.
They say fortune favours the persistent, and this couldn&rsquo;t be truer than in Chebet&rsquo;s quest for the world 5000m title.
&ldquo;My friend Beatrice Chebet is the best. She has the world record, she is very tough to beat. I knew it was going to be a battle until the finish line and it was a great one," said Kipyegon. "Iam so grateful to come home with a silver medal in the 5000m. My prayer was to be on the podium. I haven't raced so many 5000m races this year, so I'm grateful."

Chebet repeats Paris double by winning 5000m title in Tokyo

Jessica Schilder of the Netherlands became the first European athlete in a decade to win the women&rsquo;s world shot put title&ndash; and the first ever from her country &ndash; with a last round effort of 20.29m that tipped the final on its head.
Up until that point at the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25 on Saturday (20), it looked as if victory was destined for New Zealand&rsquo;s Maddison-Lee Wesche, who had led with a first-round throw of 20.06m to equal her personal best, and who also held the second-best throw of 19.90m after five of the six rounds.
At last year&rsquo;s Paris 2024 Olympic Games, a fifth-round effort of 19.86m in rainswept conditions looked likely to bring Wesche Olympic gold, only for Germany&rsquo;s Yemisi Ogunleye to claim the title with a final throw of 20.00m.
On a damp rather than rainy night in the Japan National Stadium, the New Zealander experienced the same emotions after fouling with the last throw of the competition.
But she still clinched a bronze medal to go with her Olympic silver &ndash; with silver this time going to the US athlete seeking a third consecutive world title, 31-year-old Chase Jackson.
The defending champion, eager to put the memory of her failure to qualify for the Paris Olympic final behind her, had arrived in Tokyo with a season-topping national record of 20.95m to her credit.
Having qualified second with a first-time effort of 19.31m earlier in the day, she struggled to reach her best form for five rounds before following Schilder&rsquo;s final effort with a throw of 20.21m that moved her into silver-medal position.
Like Jackson, Schilder had been a picture of frustration until the final round of this competition, although a fourth-round throw of 19.51m had moved her up to fourth place.
That final inspired effort, accompanied by a huge roar, rounded off a hugely successful season for the 2022 and 2024 European champion.
She began by winning European indoor gold in her home venue of Apeldoorn and then claimed world indoor silver in Nanjing before moving into an outdoor season which saw her win the Diamond League Final in Zurich following the belated disqualification of Canada&rsquo;s Sarah Mitton.
The 26-year-old from Volendam thus added world gold to the bronze she won at the 2022 edition &ndash; an achievement that soon saw her in tears as she embraced the US thrower who had finished just eight centimetres shy of the gold medal-winning mark.
&ldquo;I still cannot believe it has happened. Not because I was not prepared, but I became ill last week,&rdquo; said Schilder. &ldquo;I had a fever for three days. That is why my confidence was lower and I didn't think it was possible anymore to get a medal here.
&ldquo;But my coach said that nothing is impossible, and I believed him 100%. Even after not such a good start to the final, I said that I'm going to try until the end. And it worked.&rdquo;
Jackson said: &ldquo;I was crying but those were tears of joy. Certain medals just mean a lot, and this one means a lot. That's how hard it was for me to grab it.&rdquo;
Wesche said: &ldquo;Women's shot put is very competitive at the moment. It's the craziest competition I've ever been part of and those are the moments you live for as an athlete.&rdquo;
Mitton, who had been firmly established in silver-medal position until the last round, saw her place on the podium disappear as her response to the late efforts of Schilder and Jackson could not better her third-round best of 19.81m.
Sweden&rsquo;s Fanny Roos finished fifth with a final round effort of 19.54m and Germany&rsquo;s Olympic champion Ogunleye, who had topped qualifying with a single effort of 19.65m, placed sixth on 19.33m.

Schilder takes shot put gold in Tokyo in last-round thriller

In crossing the finish line in 1:18:35 at the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25 on Saturday (20), Brazil's Caio Bonfim claimed gold in the 20km race walk just a week after winning silver at the 35km distance.
&ldquo;Your father is a world champion,&rdquo; he said to the camera afterwards, sending a message to his children: Miguel, Theo and Manoel.&nbsp; With heavy breathing and backward glances every 30 seconds on his approach to the Japan National Stadium, Bonfim overtook three contenders during the last lap to claim his title.
&ldquo;I overtook the Chinese and Spanish athletes on the last lap, but I thought I was second and accelerated to try to win a medal,&rdquo; he said, only learning of his win when crossing the finish line.
He threw himself on the track, wrapped in the finish line tape, the realisation of his gold medal showing through incredulous eyes.
&ldquo;I lost my wedding ring in the third kilometre. I believe my wife will be OK because I won today,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;The oldest of my three children, Miguel, told me he missed me. I said that my success could compensate for my absence. I am here for him and I made sure my effort was worthy of him.&rdquo; Bonfim already had two major international silver medals and two bronze, and now he owns a first global gold.&nbsp; Japan's world record-holder Toshikazu Yamanishi tops the world ranking this season and he led for much of the second half of the race, but was hit with a two-minute time penalty, taking him out of contention. Bonfim, whose strategy had been to stick with Yamanishi, then took up the lead with a few kilometres to go.
&ldquo;I am very disappointed,&rdquo; Yamanishi said. &ldquo;I wish I had been more careful during the race. I wanted to win the gold medal, so I pushed for it. I had to go for it but that led me to disqualification. I don't know what to do now. To win in Tokyo was one of my big goals. I need to think about my next steps.&rdquo;
China's Wang Zhaozhao came right after Bonfim, clocking 1:18:43 for the silver &ndash; his first World Championships medal after winning at the Asian Championships in May and claiming silver in the Asian Games in 2023. He was ranked eighth heading into the race.
&ldquo;I knew I would be fighting the strongest race walkers in the world and the temperature, so I moved to a training camp in Yuanjiang in Yunnan Province for a whole month,&rdquo; Wang explained. "It is a small city with a very similar climate to Tokyo. This competition was my main focus this year. This is my first big international medal, so I couldn't be happier about the result.&rdquo;
Spain's Paul McGrath finished just two seconds later, clocking 1:18:45 for the bronze, his first medal at a World Championships.&nbsp;&ldquo;A dream come true,&rdquo; he said.
His pace dropped as he suffered with cramps in the final kilometre, but he held on to a podium place, climbing from seventh place in the world ranking to celebrate the second medal of the day for Spain, following Maria Perez's gold in the women's race just hours earlier.
&ldquo;When the leader Toshikazu Yamanishi got disqualified, I was very scared I would get disqualified too,&rdquo; he admitted. &ldquo;I had two cards at that moment. I was just thinking that winning a medal is better than not winning one at all, so I calmed down, got my race technique under control, and finished with bronze. I will go for the gold next time.&rdquo;
