During the 9 days of the World Athletics Championships Budapest 23, there will be a number of superstars aiming to claim multiple gold medals. Here, we present six of them who will fight for the glory in more than one individual events.

Sha'Carri Richardson (USA) – Women’s 100 and 200 metres

Is 2023 finally the time for Sha'Carri Richardson? The sprinter, who is still only 23 years old, will face a tough challenge to reach the top, as the Jamaican golden generation has dominated the women's 100m and 200m in recent years. While Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Elaine Thompson-Herah have been relatively quiet so far this year, Shericka Jackson has had some impressive performances this summer.

Richardson, known for her special appearance and unique tattoos, amazed the crowd at the US Nationals a few days ago. She set new personal bests in both distances. Her time of 10.71 seconds in the 100m was the fastest achieved by Jackson in 2023, while her time of 21.94 seconds in the 200m also positions her as a strong medal contender for the Hungarian capital.

Faith Kipyegon has made waves in the world of athletics with her remarkable achievements. In early June, she created history by breaking both the 1500m and 5000m world records in the same week. Recently, she confirmed her participation in not only her main event, the 1500m, but also the 5000m at the National Athletics Centre.

Even before her extraordinary time of 3:49.11 in Florence on 2 June, Faith Kipyegon was already regarded as the greatest in the 1500m. She has won the last two Olympic Games and has consistently secured at least a silver medal at every World Championships since 2017. Additionally, since June 2018 she has delivered these performances as a mother.

After securing a third-place finish in the 100 meters at the US Nationals, which serves as the qualifying event for the World Championships, Noah Lyles has earned a spot in Team USA in the most prestigious event. Although his best time this year stands at "only" 9.94 seconds, we firmly believe that he possesses the potential to present a formidable challenge to competitors Fred Kerley and Marcell Jacobs on August 20th.

In the 200 meters last year, Noah Lyles came remarkably close to Usain Bolt's legendary world record, falling short by just 12 hundredths of a second. Experts are optimistic that he can bridge that gap under optimal wind conditions on the evening of 25 August. Notably, he has already demonstrated his prowess in Hungary, achieving a double victory at the 2020 Gyulai István Memorial - Hungarian Athletics Grand Prix by triumphing in both the 100 and 200 meters in quick succession, although the stakes were slightly lower in that race.

Jakob Ingebrigtsen (Norway) – Men’s 1500 and 5000 metres

Jakob Ingebrigtsen, who holds the world indoor record for the 1500m since 2022, showcased his exceptional talent by delivering an outstanding performance in the 2-mile race held in Paris last June. Throughout this season, he has been in sensational form, exemplified by his remarkable time of 3:27.95 in the 1500m at the Diamond League in Oslo, which not only secured a European record but also demonstrated his incredible abilities.

At the age of just 22, Jakob Ingebrigtsen stands a realistic chance of accomplishing the 1500-5000m double, a feat last achieved by Bernard Lagat at the 2007 World Championships. In the previous year, his pursuit of this double was thwarted by Jake Wightman, who unfortunately misses the World Championships due to injury. However, this year presents a potentially tougher challenge for Ingebrigtsen, particularly in the 5000m event, where he will face the formidable Joshua Cheptegei on the final night of the World Championships, setting the stage for an unforgettable battle for victory.

Among the three Jamaican superstars, Shericka Jackson is the one who has showcased her remarkable form this summer. While Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Elaine Thompson-Herah will only reveal their true condition in Budapest. Jackson, the youngest of the trio, is having an exceptional year as she celebrates her 29th birthday on July 16th.

Jackson has been delivering outstanding performances, achieving double victories at the Jamaica Championships. Her winning time of 10.65 seconds in the 100m stands as the best in the world this year, while her impressive time of 21.71 seconds in the 200m was only surpassed by Gabby Thomas. With her current form, it appears likely that Jackson will be the Jamaican athlete to challenge Sha'Carri Richardson, who is aiming to transcend her own limits, at the upcoming World Championships.

Sifan Hassan, renowned for her incredible versatility as a runner, has emerged as a strong contender in a range of events, from 1500m to the marathon. However, for the upcoming World Championships, she has been selected for the 5000m and 10,000m races. Fans can expect to see the Ethiopian-born Dutch athlete in the women's 10,000m final on the opening night of the championships, setting the stage for a potentially perfect World Championships campaign.

During the Tokyo Olympics, Hassan demonstrated her ability to excel in the grueling 1500m-5000m-10,000m triple, coming close to earning podium finishes in all three events. While her task in Budapest may appear less challenging, she will face an incredibly tough battle on Saturday, August 26th, as she takes on the new world record holder, Faith Kipyegon.
