<p>As the global elite and tens of thousands of recreational runners gather for the World Athletics Road Running Championships (WRRC Copenhagen 26) &ndash; the official world championships for the one mile, 5km, and half marathon &ndash; the ambitions extend well beyond record-breaking times and race distances.</p>
<p>Behind the scenes, organisers are systematically integrating social responsibility to improve workflows, procurement, and processes &ndash; not only for these championships but for major events in the future. While elite athletes race through Copenhagen's streets followed by 65,000 participants, both the runners and the more than 100,000 spectators are expected to play an active role in the event's sustainability efforts.</p>
<p>This includes sorting waste responsibly, choosing environmentally friendly transport options, and opting for climate-conscious food. At the same time, the event will act as a catalyst for engaging children, young people, and individuals living with illnesses across the country &ndash; all with the aim of creating lasting benefits for public health.&nbsp;</p>
<p>"It may sound simple to ask people to sort their waste or take the bus, but as a leading green city, Copenhagen has a responsibility &ndash; especially when we welcome the world," says Christopher R&oslash;hl, Mayor of Culture and Leisure, City of Copenhagen. "We cannot take over the city and its public spaces without taking responsibility for the footprint we leave behind. That is why I am proud that we are hosting a World Championships that addresses climate impact while strengthening our sports communities. It sets an important new direction for the future of tourism and events &ndash; and Copenhagen is leading the way."</p>
<h3>A clear and measurable goal</h3>
<p>A key ambition, in collaboration with World Athletics, is to achieve gold certification under the federation's sustainability framework, the Athletics for a Better World Standard. To reach this level, organisers must collect data and demonstrate action across 55 action areas, covering climate end environmental impact, social responsibility, and governance. This objective is also central to the event's partners:</p>
<p>"When Denmark hosts major international sporting events, it comes with a responsibility to do so in a more sustainable way," says Lars Lundov, CEO, Sport Event Denmark. "That is why at Sport Event Denmark, we have introduced minimum green requirements for event organisers. It is about concrete actions &ndash; from renewable energy and reducing food waste to circular solutions and better use of public transport. Together with organisers such as Sparta, we demonstrate that major sporting events bring people together while also setting the direction for a more sustainable future."</p>
<p>A similar focus is reflected in the strategy of Wonderful Copenhagen:<br />"International events bring locals and visitors together around shared experiences making them stronger catalysts for changing behaviour and creating long-term positive impact both locally and internationally," says Kit Lykketoft, Director of Congresses, Events &amp; Sustainability. "Ensuring such a lasting legacy from events is something we work on strategically across Copenhagen's tourism sector, and we are therefore very pleased to be part of the ambitions connected to the World Athletics Road Running Championships."</p>
<h3>Small steps, big impact</h3>
<p>While the ambitions are concrete, the approach is deliberately pragmatic and impact-driven. Rather than grand gestures, organisers are focused on steady, measurable progress&nbsp;&ndash; taking many small steps in the right direction, collecting data, and using insights to drive long-term improvements.</p>
<p>"The World Championships provide a unique international platform that allows us to elevate our social responsibility efforts to a new level," says Dorte Vibjerg, CEO of Sparta Athletics &amp; Running. "The requirements we introduce and the experience we gain here will create lasting effects that extend far beyond the event itself, directly influencing how we organise future major events."</p>

World Road Running Championships in Copenhagen to deliver lasting positive impact

<p>Three North American road record-holders will headline USA&rsquo;s team for the <strong>World Athletics Road Running Championships Copenhagen 26</strong> on 19-20 September.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Weini Kelati, Conner Mantz and&nbsp;Yared Nuguse&nbsp;are among the 19 athletes selected for the event, which includes one mile, 5km and half marathon races.</p>
<p>Olympic 1500m bronze medallist Nuguse will compete in his first World Road Running Championships after qualifying in the mile. The North American record-holder will be joined by three-time US road mile champion Vincent Ciattei, who will make his US team debut.</p>
<p>Kelati and Mantz are both area record-holders in the half marathon, while Mantz also owns the North American marathon record.</p>
<p>Kelati, a 2024 Olympian in the 10,000m, leads a women&rsquo;s half marathon squad that includes <a href="https://worldathletics.org/competitions/world-athletics-road-running-championships/copenhagen26/news/press-releases/statement-usatf-participation-road-running-championships-copenhagen-26" target="_blank" rel="noopener">six other athletes from the USATF Half Marathon Championships</a>. Scoring will be limited to Kelati and three athletes who were misdirected late in the race: Jess McClain, Emma Grace Hurley and Ednah Kurgat.</p>
<p>Joining Mantz on the men&rsquo;s half marathon team are Wesley Kiptoo, Hillary Bor and Ahmed Muhumed.&nbsp;</p>
<p>US champion Drew Hunter has been confirmed on the&nbsp;men&rsquo;s team for the 5km, joined by Dylan Jacobs. <p>World Athletics has made the exceptional decision to allow additional female USA Track and Field (USATF) athletes to run at the 2026 World Road Running Championships (WRRC) following the extraordinary nature of an incident at the recent USATF Half-Marathon Championships that acted as a qualifier for the upcoming event in Copenhagen.</p>
<p>World Athletics has agreed on a strictly one-off basis that USATF will be able to select seven athletes rather than the usual four athletes for the women&rsquo;s half marathon event at the WRRC in September.</p>
<p>An extraordinary set of circumstances at the half marathon championships in Atlanta, Georgia, culminated in the breakaway lead pack of three athletes in the women&rsquo;s race (Jess McClain, Emma Grace Hurley, Ednah Kurgat) being led off course and finishing outside of the automatic qualifying positions.</p>
<p>In working to find a solution, World Athletics has been sympathetic to the impacted athletes who would otherwise miss out on competing at the WRRC Copenhagen 2026, and understanding of the unprecedented situation USATF &ndash; one our leading Member Federations &ndash; has found itself in.</p>
<p>USATF will select their four fastest athletes to be their scoring athletes, while non-scoring athletes (meaning they cannot win medals, receive prize money, nor count towards the team result &ndash; but will receive world ranking points based on their final finishing position) will take the three additional places. The three non-scoring athletes will wear USA national kit but of a different style to the four scoring athletes.</p>

<p>When the World Championships in the half marathon, 5K, and One Mile come to Copenhagen in September, it&rsquo;s not just about elite athletes and medals. The partners behind the championship are now launching an activation initiative with the ambition of getting more Danes &ndash; including vulnerable citizens &ndash; out running before, during, and after the World Championships.<br /><br />The aim is for the World Championships to be felt long before race days and to leave a lasting impact that goes beyond the event itself. That&rsquo;s why the partners behind the championship are launching a joint initiative called Vejen til VM <em>(The Road to the World Championships)</em>, which will be rolled out in the months leading up to the event. &nbsp;<br /><br />The overarching goal is to initiate activities and programs that engage more Danes in running and physical activity &ndash; across age, ability, and geography &ndash; while simultaneously strengthening communities and local clubs. <br /><br /><em>&ldquo;When we host major international sporting events in Copenhagen, it is not only the city that serves as host &ndash; it is the people of Copenhagen. That is why it is crucial that the city&rsquo;s residents are also able to share in the joy, and that the events leave their mark both on the city itself and on the habits and communities that grow out of them. The partners behind the championship are now launching an activation initiative with the ambition of getting more Danes running before, during, and after the event

The World Athletics Road Running Championships in Copenhagen will be felt across Denmark

<p>You can now apply for a place in the <strong>Elite B or C field</strong> at the World Athletics Road Running Championships Copenhagen 26.&nbsp;<br /><br />Please note, that Elite A in this years edition are the runners that have been selected by their National Federation to represent their country at the World Road Running Championships. Elite B are international runners, see qualification times below, while Elite C is national runners from Denmark.<br /><br />Also note that as an Elite B or C participant, you are responsible for paying for your own race entry.</p>
<p>Elite B and C will have a separate start, after Elite A has been sent off.<br /><br /><strong>Deadline for applying is 15th February.&nbsp;</strong><br /><br />Please note that meeting the time standard does not guarantee entry. To ensure a fair and competitive elite field, all applications will be reviewed individually. Even if you meet the published time standards, your place is not automatically guaranteed. <p>On 19 September 2026 the best runners on the planet on the 5 km and One mile compete for the World Championship titles in Copenhagen.</p>
<p>Everyone is welcome to join. Whether you&rsquo;re fast or slow, have short or long legs, you&rsquo;re in for a unique run and an experience you&rsquo;ll never forget.</p>

<p>Energy was high in F&aelig;lledparken as 188 pupils from Institut Sankt Joseph, Strandvejskolen, and Guldberg Skole took part in the &ldquo;One Year to Go&rdquo; relay on Friday morning. Each child ran 400 meters before passing the baton, and all participants were rewarded with a unique prize: a free entry to the World Championships One Mile (1,609m), taking place in Copenhagen on September 19, 2026.</p>
<p>With up to 65,000 participants expected, the event &ndash; officially titled the World Athletics Road Running Championships Copenhagen 26 &ndash; has the potential to become the largest mass-participation sports event ever held on Danish soil.</p>
<p>The City of Copenhagen is looking forward to hosting the event:</p>
<p>&ldquo;As a modern capital city, Copenhagen should, of course, attract major sporting events that activate as well as inspire people. Therefore, I am very pleased that the children of the city will have the chance to become a part of the World Championships in running exactly one year from now. It is going to be huge when the world&rsquo;s elite visit Copenhagen with up to 65.000 runners across different distances,&rdquo; says the Lord Mayor Lars Weiss.</p>
<p>&ldquo;Today, schoolchildren took the very first steps toward the Half Marathon World Championships, and with that, we can truly begin the countdown to the biggest running festival Copenhagen has ever seen. I hope the experience has sparked their enthusiasm, because in a year the city will be ready to welcome them back together with both world-class athletes and thousands of recreational runners, for a championship that will bring the whole city together&rdquo;, says the Mayor of Culture and Leisure, Mia Nyegaard.</p>
<p><strong>Building a legacy beyond race week </strong></p>
<p>Today's relay for schoolchildren was also part of the activation initiative &lsquo;Road to the World Championships&rsquo;, which aims to create meaningful, long-term engagement for various target groups because of hosting the World Championships. The initiative is run by one of the organizations behind the World Championships, the Danish Athletics Federation, and they are excited to use the event to inspire and engage young people:</p>
<p>"The World Championships in Copenhagen are not just about attracting the world&rsquo;s best runners &ndash; it&rsquo;s just as much about how we can use the championships to inspire and engage the next generation. The &lsquo;One Year to Go&rsquo; run is a great example of how we can open the doors to sports and give children a positive experience through running and the community around it. The goal is for the World Championships to leave a lasting impact that goes beyond the championship days themselves and strengthens running culture and clubs in Denmark far into the future," says Sofie Amdisen Andersen, project manager at Danish Athletics.</p>
<p><strong>A global running festival awaits </strong></p>
<p>Today&rsquo;s school relay also marked the official one-year countdown to the World Championships, where the absolute best in the world will compete across three distances, setting the stage for a massive international running festival in the Danish capital.</p>
<p>&ldquo;Since hosting the World Athletics World Half Marathon Championships in 2014, Denmark has established itself as an innovative and strong running nation. With one year to go until the 2026 World Championships in One Mile, 5 km, and Half Marathon, preparations are well underway. Together with Danish Athletics, Sparta and the City of Copenhagen / Wonderful Copenhagen, we look forward to welcoming the world to a true celebration of running in the heart of Copenhagen,&rdquo; said Lars Lundov, CEO, Sport Event Denmark.</p>

<p>The whole championship weekend will be a true running celebration. After the finish line, runners will gather with friends and family in the big and festive Runners Area in F&aelig;lledparken.</p>
